I am considering going to Pulau Tioman for the first time. First time to Malaysia alltogether.
I am thinking about staying at Berjaya Tioman Resort, which supposedly should have decent snorkeling right off the beach. Is this true?
If it is, how are the waters there generally? I am not really a strong swimmer.
If there are better places on the island to snorkel off - which has calm waters - I'd appreciate if anyone would mention them :-)

Depends on which time of the year? Not advisable when the NE Monsoon blows! But great place to vacation otherwise. I would forget about the Berjaya Tioman Resort (the first and last time I stayed there I had really bad food poisoning!). Although I don't swim/snorkle, I doubt the waters right off its beach is good for snorkling as they are off the main jetty into Tioman and, therefore, the most built up portion of Tioman.
Go and stay at Penaga or one of the newer resorts/hotels on different sides of Tiomam from Tekek and get the resort or a tour operator to take you snorkling where it's best.. Enjoy Tioman! It's a beautiful island!

I've been there, too, Kirsty, and stayed in both Tekek (Berjaya), Juara and Dayang ;-)

Oops! I meant Panuba :( I didn't stay there but walked there from Kg Tekek when I stayed at Berjaya some years ago.. The owner took me back to the main jetty at Tekek by boat and told me they'll come pick me up from the main jetty if I decide to come and stay next time..
