We are thinking about flying from Kunming to Changsha, staying 1 night and then we want to get to FengHuang for 2 nights, coming back to Changsha via Zhiangjiaje (maybe) to catch a plane up to Taiyuan (Pingyao). I can't find any word of a 2-3 day tour to FengHuang online. What is the likelihood I can arrange a private/non-private tour or even a shuttle bus to get to FH from either the airport or our hotel (haven't picked one yet but heard great things about one called the FeeTel Creativity hotel)? Any idea of cost?

Sounds pretty action packed! It doesn't sound like you'll visit Zhangjiajie (only transit). How come? I saw my dad's pictures of both Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang and they both looked pretty spectacular.

Anyway, based on this website (government?), there are direct buses from Changsha and Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang. The website also have some one day tours to various places around Zhangjiajie including Fenghuang. Unfortunately, they only listed the admission price for each location.

Now the following website is in Chinese but it outlined a 3 day tour starting from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang and includes pick up / drop off from the airport / train station, etc. You can try translating in Google. At least this should give you an idea of costs. The prices are as follow:

If you're joining an existing group, Std room (no star) = 668 RMB, 3* = 830, 4* = 920, 5* = 1290. If you want to form your own tour and there are only 2-3 people in your group (I think you said you're traveling with your mom?), Std room = 1368 p/p, 3* = 1,530, 4* = 1,620, 5* = 1,990. They include admission but not the cable car or additional transporation costs.

Hi Sandi no idea about answering main part of your question but notice a little error...Taiyuan is a very big city and a major hub for train transport. Pingyao is about 2 hours by road from Taiyuan.
