Visiting southern China from Hong Kong--Spring 2013 Posted: Tue February 7, 2012 06:15 PM UTC
4th trip to China coming up in spring 2013! This time, Ma and I are starting our trip from Hong Kong (2nites). Either by train or flight or bus (no tour groups!) we have targeted the areas of Sanjiang (for Chengyang bridge), Fenghuang town (near Tongren), Luoping rapeseed fields, and Xingyi (Maling Gorge). I was thinking about flying into Guilin and doing a bus tour to Sanjiang (that's the only bus tour i'll agree too, we prefer to do things on our own) which also takes us through the Longsheng rice terrace area, and then fly from Guilin to Kunming and take a train to Xingyi with a POSSIBLE stopover at Luoping to photograph the fields (if I can do it from the train without stopping, that would be ok too), and then maybe a train northbound to connect to some other train to get us to the Fenghuang area (anybody know how we can do this or should we just return by train to Kunming and fly from there?). We'd prefer to avoid sleeping overnight on a train, preferring to stay for the night in on of those towns. After Fenghuang, we'll head up to Pingyao from the nearest airport that offers a selection of timely flights to Taiyuan (which town should that be then?). I know there's a photography tour that does all that area in 15 days but we only can budget for 5-6 days (7 max). Suggestions? Keep in mind that we are whacky enough to do it all if we can, at warp speed.
