What to really visit in HK?
Posted: Mon February 6, 2012 10:27 PM UTC
Hello,

WE are going to spend 5 days in HK and first I was taken with this idea, but now I'm quite interrotagive. Cause we're going to spend one day in Macau, one day in Lantau and one afternoon/evening on Victoria Peak. But there are other things to visit?

Cause I'm ok to the idea to visit the city center, strolling between amazing skyscrapers, do some shopping, etc. But suddently HK seems lil bit flat. I can not find any kind of historic landmarks as old streets as in Singapore or Macau.

We'd like to visit natural patrimony and go to beach (can we find beautiful beaches in HK territory and the is the water not freezing in early march?).

Thank you

Historical landmarks - the first that came to my mind is the former supreme court house in the colonial era, right in the middle of Central.

In Wanchai, there is the blue house, I think it has a small museum in there as well. It shows what pre-WWII buildings look like. Much of them are gone as the property value skyrocketed, and have made way for highrise posh condos.

There are also some historical trails that you can follow on www.discoverhongkong.com The official tourism website.

This winter has been cold in hk. You can still go to Stanley and Repulse Bay as it has more tourist-related things to do. The outer islands have nice beaches too. But don't expect Thailand-like beaches and it may be too cold to dip into the water. There are also many hiking trails. I've been to Dragon's Back trail and it is spectacular!

Hong Kong has more than enough to occupy 5 days.

When visiting Lantau, don't forget the big budha and the skytram to it. Ride the Dingdong, which is an open tram, on Hong Kong island during the evening to see the lights (and the people returning from a hard days' work), ride the Star Ferry.

Hong Kong Island: Visit Times Square at night.Visit a temple, visit Hong Kong Park (near Victoria Park) with the free Tea pot museum. Western Market has some nice older buildings, and there are some old cobblestone streets in the Lan Kwai Fong area.

Kowloon: Visit a few of the night markets-Lady's market being one of the more popular ones. Eat outside at night. Visit Kowloon park and have a picnic or watch the elderly do their morning tai chi. Watch the free Harbor Light show from Victoria harbor at night.

We liked Bird and Flower Streets in Kowloon - just off Natham Road. Also the no car island of Cheung Chau is worth a day trip. Slow ferry one way and fast the other

hi,
you can get quite some historic sites to see within those 5 days in HK alone. I definitely recommend to see Heritage routes, we visited one in Fanling in New Teritorries, but there are more. The walled cities of Hong Kong are interesting to see, also their ancient temples and shrines. I've got some photos and tips on my HK pages, but you can also get free brochures from tourist information board next to Star Ferry port, which are great.

For the natural scenery, I'd recommend a visit to HK Wetland park, lots of birds there and nice hike, lovely paths, quiet place.
Other place we liked was Lamma island, great for easy hiking and for fresh seafood. There was also beach, and there're no cars allowed on the island so it's very quiet comparing to Nathan road.

Hi,

Thank you. Actually I "visited" hong Kong in google street view and I can not find any kind of large pedestrian street.

Can you propose me some large modern malls or lively pedestrian shopping streets to eat, do shopping and have fun.

Thx

Large modern malls - There are so many shopping malls in Hong Kong, the ones that you may likely come across would be Harbour city in Tsim Sha Tsui, IFC in Central as they are close to tourist attractions.

Ladies Street and Fa Yuen Street in Mongkok are closed off for pedestrians, and they are well-known street markets. Sai yeung choi street around Mongkok Station is closed off for pedestrians only on Sundays. So is the streets around Sogo Department Store in Causeway Bay, as that area gets very busy with lots of people walking around. Jardine's Crescent has a smaller scale market stalls just across the busy street from Sogo. In Wanchai, Tai Yuen Street has some market stalls as well.

WTC is quite good to look inside (and outside too) with cool square - in Causway bay.
Fu Shin street/Tai Po market are whole different story and has authentic local feel, and there is little and old Man Mo temple to see.
Like Mim said, there's loads of malls in HK... you'll for sure notice them without even lot of search.

Hong Kong is not a popular city, there have many tall building, the beach is not first choice, you should go to estate for visit, and you will wonder why hong kong is samll place but live too many people, and I also suggest you to go the fish market where can taste the local seafood, it's not delicious but extreme delicious. If u need more info, please leave message for me, I can intro more local experience for u.

Suggest you visiting the islands e.g Cheung Chau and Tai O fishing village & stilt-house for natural scene and having Chinese seafood on a boat in Typhoon Shelter Causeway Bay.

For historic landmarks and large modern malls, you can take the open-top Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus to travel between the attractions. It travels around the main attractions within the central part of Hong Kong Island (Central, Sheung Wan, Wanchai and Causeway Bay). You can find the historic building in Western Market, Man Mo Temple, Lascar Row, Bishop's House, Old Central Police Station, Blue House Cluster and Wing Lee Street to experience the old Hong Kong culture and colonial lifestyle; and you can also enjoy shopping at Times Square, The Landmark and Pacific Place.

You don't say when you are going, but just to let you know the Tung Chung to the Big Buddha cable car is closed for 2 months for maintainance. You can still go to the Buddha and Po Lin but must take the bus to Ngong Ping from either Mui Wo or Tung Chung. Wetlands Park is closed for the next 3 weeks due to the finding of a dead bird with avian flu. Neither of these things should impair your trip.

I would spend a day on Lantau visiting Mui Wo, the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery and Tai O. From Tai O you can get to Tung Chung and the MTR.

I would also recommend a trip to Cheung Chau - lots of boats, temples, beaches, lovely walks.

Lamma is also worth going to. Get the ferry to Yeung Shu Wan then walk across the island to Sok Kwa Wan for seafood meal.

Go to Mong Kok and visit bird market, flower market, goldfish street and ladies market.

Combine a trip up the Peak with a trip to Stanley/St stevens for the market, beaches and war cemetery.

Explore some of the New Territories. Sha Tin - park, 10,000 Buddha temple, walk cycle along Shing Mun River. Combine with visit to further afield parts of new Territories such as tai Po wishing tree, railway museum (I must admit I've never been to either of these), fan Ling - temples.

Go on one of Hong Kong's many hiking trails. For example hike on one of the trails near Sai Kung and have a seafood meal in Sai Kung when you are done.
