It took a while to recover from the end of a long marriage, but I am happily single now. I've been by myself for long enough that I don't think I could live with someone all the time--I like my space. (Roommates on 2-3 week trips are a different matter--it's temporary, and we aren't glued together)

I enjoy having a travelling companion - even a long term one, and whether or not there's actual travel involved - but the traditional structure and roles of couplehood are absolutely suffocating. I shall remain very happily single.

Iīm single and not unhappy about it at all.

Not that i donīt want a girlfriend, but itīs not that i am out searching for one.

I guess thats why i have met some really fantastic women recently cause they never show up for the desperate lonely heart :O)

I mentioned on another thread that I divorced some 30 years ago but failed to mention a long term relationship that is now also over. I am quite happy in my single life but do enjoy mixed company in most activities.

Carole.

I have been divorced now for almost 11 years. I don't think I should have ever been married. Much happier single.

Makes one wonder what happened with this generation.

I see nothing wrong with being married, divorced, single or whatever people chose.

At least we have the choice to chose.

That is more than many of our ancestors had, especially the women.

Our ancestors Claus?

Many 15 and 16 year old girls of Bangladeshi origin who live in my area of London and born in UK are regularly taken to Bangladesh to be given in "arranged" marriages, often to men in their forties of fifties. Do not thnk for one minute this idea is an historic one only.

Sure it still happens in many parts of the world today Fergy, but iwas just talking about the ancestors from the people in this thread.
You just have to go back to our grandparents before most women had little choice to whether they wanted to get married or not.

I cant imagine anything worse than having your partner chosen for you. I didn't do such a good job so what might have happened I wonder?

Carole.

My maternal grandmother got pregnat when she was 14 back in 1930 and she was told right away that "you are marrying that guy whether you like him or not".
In the end she did not marry him cause he ran away and jumped the first boat to America and was never seen again.
After that she was treated like the village prostitute until a hyperactive carzy guy with a big heart moved to town and married her.

The first daughter she had never married herself, mabye as a result of her mothers story and even she had to face a lot of comments for that in the 1950īs.

My grandmother later had 7 more kids, my mother one of them and i remember as a kid that there was one lady who would never talk to me and my cousins but we just took it as she was a crazy lady, but i have learned since then that the reason why she looked down on us was because my mothers older sister, who lived across the road, was divorced with 2 children.
And this was in the 1970īs.

These days things are a lot easier for people in Denmark who chose a lifestyle that is a little different from the big mob, but itīs not really that long ago that it was not all that easy, especially for the women.
