I don't think chaozhou is a tourist spot. You may go to sichuan or guizhou province instead.

How about somewhere like Luoyang? It is on the way from Beijing to Xi'an by train. You can visit the Longmen Grottoes and the Shaolin temple and it was one of the ancient capitals of China.

Although, I heard from friends that the Shaolin Temple is a bit of a tourist trap.

About Chaozhou, according to this website, the closest airport is Jieyang. I checked ctrip and there are direct flights from Beijing to Jieyang and I guess you can take a cab to town.

2. Chaozhou is only about 24 kilometers (14.9 miles) from the Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport. Visitors intending to travel by air can transfer to the airport getting in and out of Chaozhou. In addition, the Chaozhou bus terminal in Chaofeng Road provides buses to Guangzhou, Shantou and Shenzhen respectively costing about 6, 1 and 5 hours.

I have a mate who lives in Chaozhou. It is not a particularly touristy area although I guess it depends on what you are looking for or if you have someone you may want to visit there.
When will you be visiting? IT is below freezin in Chengde at the moment and around 0°C during the day in Beijing (probably -10°C at night). Maybe Hangzhou would be an option as it nearer the coast ( currently around 6-15°C but only around 0 at night. Tianjin may be another option for you to research. I visited there a few times on business and found it a pleasant place and it had a European quarter years ago so it is a little bit different from other places -it even has a cathedral!
