Driving over fm SD to Tijuana = Best Choice?
Posted: Tue January 31, 2012 07:23 PM UTC
Hello everyone. This may sound like a dumb question, but I'm planning on driving over into Tijuana this weekend in my 2011 Honda Civic. What are the chances that it will be stolen/burglarized over there.
Do you guys recommend parking somewhere in SD and walking across? If so I would really appreciate ideas on the best and closest places to park.
Thank you so much.

I would recommend parking your car in the U.S. and walking across for two reasons: it is a very good possibility that your car will be stolen/burglarized and also it is very frustrating and time consuming to drive back across the border. Are you going to be taking the 805 S to the border? If so there is an exit right before the border and there are several parking lots where you can pay to park your car. It's been a while since I have been there but I remember that it was not very expensive. Once you get across the border you can get a cab and negotiate your price.

The odds of your car getting stolen are the same as in any other city. The down side to driving across is the Border wait on the way back. Depending on where you want to go in TJ or what you want to do, you may not need a car and can getby on taxi. I live in TJ. have you been here before ? where are you going or want to do and see ?

Thanks guys!
@Weasl- Yes, I plan to take the 805-S. I'll look for that lot.
I'm just apprehensive I suppose because its a relatively new vehicle w/tinted windows that I've seen people checking out. I think I'll leave it behind in SD.
@Julio- Thanks. I've read your other posts about where to catch the taxis so that helps.
@James- Where would I catch said trolley from? Downtown SD?

Hi I agree with Julio that the chances of your car being stolen are the same as in almost any other city.

If you are staying in the downtown SD area, I'm not sure why you'd be using I-805 to get to the border when I-5 would be more convenient from the downtown area.

However, if the safety of your car is a concern for you I'd sugguest that you drive to the nearest SD Trolley station that has a large parking lot. There are quite a few with such lots and parking is free as well as relatively safe.

Trolley Map with Parking noted:
http://www.sdmts.com/trolley/trolley.asp

I suggest the Trolley parking lots because all of the parking lots near the border charge and then you will have to walk to the border, not far, but the Trolley stop in San Ysidro has a stop right on the border and the bus is waiting a few steps away.

Take the SD Trolley to the border and just if front of the exit building, there will most likely be a bus that will take you across and as I understand it you can take the same when crossing back into the USA.

Walking across into Mexico is easy enough because there aren't huge lines that way and the "Tourist" areas are very near and an easy path to follow.

It will be the return back into the USA that can be difficult. The lines are long for both drivers and for pedestrians. I personally would rather sit in a car while waiting than stand in a line while waiting. The bus bringing you across would be the ideal compromise, to my way of thinking. I have taken a bus across and back but not with the company that I've seen waiting at the front of the exit building, so suggest before bording ask them if they will also bring you back when you are ready, where to get picked up and what time they stop running. Just so you aren't stranded. See what I mean? Ive built pages on both San Ysidro and Tijuan if you'd like to get a better idea.
