Things to do and see
Posted: Mon January 30, 2012 06:20 PM UTC
So I am going to Xi'an and I want to know what else there is to see besides the Terra Cotta warriors (which I am sooo excited to see). Any suggestions?

Xi'an has a very nice city wall, well worth the visit. It has a Muslim quarter, complete with a mosque in a uniquely Chinese style (Xi'an was the starting point of the Silk Road, and the Muslim traders introduced Islam).

The Big Goose Pagoda, some intersting museums (we went to a prehistoric village one).

Beware of the dust blowing in from the Gobi Desert...

Also you could take a bike ride around the top of the city wall.
The Terrcottas are an awesome sight. You can't help but stare and wonder -why so much.

Biking along the city wall is fun and nice to get away from the crowds. It was a bit bumpy though.

If you have a day or two to spare, consider taking a side trip to Huashan. It's about 2 hours away. And really beautiful. I'd prefer to stay overnight and walked the 5 peaks circuit but we only have 1 day, so did a day trip with a "tour" (I call it a bus ride with mandatory shopping stops and crazy drivers.). There is an official tourist bus that goes there leaving at around 7am from the train station. You #1, I think.

I seem to recal some famous TOMB, a Mineral (rock) museum , a Terracota Soldier factory.

There are a couple of pagodas (big goose and little goose), there's a "forest" of steles and a lively Muslim street. Outside of the city (actually 2 hours) is one of China's sacred mountains, HuaShan

If you cycle round the walls, make sure the bike you get is in decent condition. None are in good condition but some are a lot worse than others.

The city inside the walls is really pleasant. As enjoyable as any of the cities we visited. If you're into modern shopping just outside the city walls at the south gate there is a big, very plush modern shopping centre. If it's a hot day, the aircon is very much appreciated :-)

At dusk some days (we chanced on it) there seems to be a drumming/dance performance at the south gate.

The two big pagodas are as much photo opportunities as anything - particularly from the walls.

I agree about Huashan but you need to be confident on your feet to go up all the steps and the chain ladder that is on one peak. It was snowing the day I went there.
We also visited a garden which included the "five room house" where the Xi incident occurred. I think it was called Huangyuan Garden. It was a very pleasant place to visit with springs and gardens.
