Getting to and from Foz
Posted: Fri January 27, 2012 02:11 PM UTC
Hi all,

I am planning to head to see the falls either tomorrow or Sunday from Asuncion. Can anyone advise with the following please?

1) Info on getting to Foz from Asuncion by bus? According to my guidebook it takes 5 hours. Any recommended tips on making that journey? I prefer to avoid overnight bus travel if possible.

2) Any recommendations on where to stay when I get there? Somewhere mid ranged is fine, ideally no more than 80 usd.

3) Whats the best means of getting from there to either of Buenos Aires or Montevideo? I am ware there´s a daily flight from Asuncion to Buenos Aires but if there is a direct flight to BA or Montevideo that doesnt cost the earth then I'd be delighted to consider it.

Any help is much appreciated.

If you want to stay in Foz do Iguacu in Brazil, try Hotel del Rey (clean, basic, small pool, good breakfast, convenient to bus depot for Brazil park, airport and bird park, and for bus to Argentina for that side of park):

See http://www.mca.gov.py/toanaci.htm for all bus departures from Asunción.

There are enough hotels at Foz, finding a mid-range won't be that difficult.

Be aware that the falls are still some 30 km further out.

The Nuestra Senora de la Asunción also has coach service across the borders:

Thanks for your help folks,

Some further questions if I may.

1) It looks I´ll be targeting the 13.40 bus tomorrow afternoon to Ciutad del Este. Any tips on getting from there over to Foz?

2) How easy is it to get from Foz to the actual falls and how long does it take?

3) How easy is it to get from the falls to the airport used by the Argentine airlines? I've taken a look on the web and there seems to be plenty of flights. Time is against me so it is unlikely I´ll check the falls from both sides. I don´t mind which of the 2 it is that I see.

Cheers again.

There is a bus from the town to the park entrance on the Brazil side. Time depends on where you are staying; some accomodations are a good ways out of town onthe road to the entrance. From the little bus depot (this may not be the rodoviaria/bus station where the bus from Asuncion arrives though) near Hotel del Rey where the bus statrs from, it's maybe about 30-40 minutes to the entrance.

3) How easy is it to get from the falls to the airport used by the Argentine airlines?
Falls on which side?
Argentine airport is part way to the entrance of the Argentine side of the park.
From the Brazil side of the park, you'd have to figure out where the local bus from the park entrance going back into Foz intersects the route of the local bus from Foz bus depot that crosses the border and goes to Puerto bus station. then you'd need to get the bus that goes from Puerto to the Argentine park entrance as far as the airport.
Or take a taxi.

Hi again,

A development. After more rummaging around on the web I have in fact booked a flight at 20.15 on Tuesday from Foz to Montevideo. This flight is from the airport in Brazil. I have tomorrow and the fay after to spend around Foz or maybe even Ciutad del Este since the direct bus tomorrow will only take me that far. Is the dam worth a visit? Is the dam easy to get to?

Thanks again.

I only visited the dam when it was constructed in 1980. It was magnificient to see at that time. It's a bit up North and I bet there will be busses going to, just like to the Falls. Remember it's another cross border object.

You asked about going from Ciudad Del Este to Foz. There's one narrow bridge going from Paraguay to Brazil, full of "trades" people; not the safest passing. Foz itself is a bit outlaw territoty; as far as I know, the real Brazilian border controls are past Foz.

Going from Brazil to Argentine via the falls and back can cause visa issues. Please check out what is possible, before you get some penalties at one border. Flying takes the risk away, but still .... mind the entry rules in this game.

"Foz itself is a bit outlaw territoty;"

????????????????????????

For any tourist/visitor, Foz appears just a normal small city in Brazil, with reasonable tourist infrastructure, in which the tourist can move freely to eat, shop, and look around.

The border control station that a tourist passes through to have a passport stamped is on the border between Brazil and Argentina.

(I suppose that if you are rubbing shoulders with smugglers, conditions may differ.)

With "Outlaw" I did not mean cowboys shooting. It's more an unofficial taxfree zone.
