Short visit to Chengde
Posted: Fri January 27, 2012 10:54 AM UTC
Hi,
I am trying to fit in a short visit to Chengde during my trip to Beijing. Is it possible to make it a one day trip if I hire a car from Beijing for the day? Like starting at 7 am since I read it takes about 2.5 hours by car and returning in the evening. Has anyone hired a car (and driver) for such a purpose before? How much does it cost? Thank you!

Can't help with a car but in general, yes, it's doable. We did it but we didn't hire a car ourselves, we asked at the hotel and they offered us a car with a driver. It costed us about 700 CNY, at 1st they wanted 900CNY but after some short negotiation we reached 700CNY. There were 3 of us, it was OK for us.
As far as I remember we left our hotel at about 7:30.
Just beware that everythng is closed there at about 17:00, which linits the sightseeing but we visited 3 temples and the summer palace and that was great and quite enough for a day trip

Chengde is one of my most remarkable memories from China

Thanks for the quick reply, Inga. Your reply makes me feel I MUST go to Chengde!
Btw when did you make the trip? I am asking to make adjustment for the price of the car + driver hire.

We visited China in September-October 2010. 17 days in general and we visited several places.
As for Chengde, we didn't make any previous arrangements, we just asked at the reception. It was some time at the end of September, I don't remember the exact date. Probably September 24 or 25.
Just after some previous research at home, we decided that it is a must :)

remember when planning the trip to check what the weather conditions are like. That may affect the trip time considerably. I have an acquaintance in Chengde and the other day when he sent me CNY greetings he mentioned it was -10°C.

@newbornman -I believe we are talking about Chengde (hebei) not Chengdu (sichuan).

Thank you, Inga and Ian. Yes, it looks it will be still quite cold in Mar (that's when I am going). Ian, do you mean better to stay put in Beijing and not to go if it is too cold?

No - just be prepared and check the conditions before you leave to make sure you are able to get there and enjoy yourself.

Sorry I have to ask you for further clarification but I live in the tropics and aren't that familiar with very cold conditions. I gather what you meant is that it may get very cold and not suitable to travel to Chengde due to icy road conditions?

As you don't state exactly when you want to go there I felt it wise to let you know it is cold there at the moment.
This will give you an idea of average temperatures for Chengde

Thank you all. In the end, I didn't go to Chengde but spent the time in Forbidden city.
