Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Albany Where can I find info on Albany, Australia?
Posted: Wed February 11, 2004 10:48 PM UTC
I will be traveling to albany in a few years and was wanting to get some travel info on this town. I am also interested in getting info on the aborigines in the area.
Is there a place that would send me the information in the mail, or is there a organization that could just email me back and forth answering questions? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Karen

Hi Karen...
Try this link and you should find all you need to know about Albany. Its a good place to visit.

www.westernaustralia.net/discover/gtsouth/albany.shtml

Also do a Google search on Albany for more info.

If you are chasing info on Aboriginals sacred sites you might be best to do a search on that too.

Enjoy your trip.... you will enjoy it

Hi. Albany (A hard "A" pronunciation) is a lovely small city. If you want to see a few pics, if this gets through, < www.webshots.com > member name "edwarl" I have some in one of my albums there. It is an important place in W.A. history. Actually Perth was settled in its earlier days through Albany. The horses that the Australian Army 1st. A.I.F. cavalry used in
the Middle East in WW I were shipped out through Albany. And Matthew Flinders began his eastward journey, circumnavigation, and first charting of the Australian coastline in 1802 just west of Albany at Cape Lleuwyn.
Also just east of Albany at Esperance and surrounds, the French names have been adopted in respect of their opposite moving charting at the same time.

Thanks so much for writing me back quickly. The link you gave me didnt work, so I dont know if there was a typing error or what.

The aboriginal question was about them in the albany area. Do they live amongst the town people or are they
outside of town? I would like to meet them and learn personally about their culture.

Thanks again
Karen

From my observations there seems to be very little, if any aboriginal population in the immediate Albany area. However along at Esperance there is a very well organised aboriginal community. I drove for a brief external visit to an aboriginal run school/training complex just north of that town. It is quite a pretty country area. I will check up on its name and maybe they even have a website up.
That organisation would be a very good source of study information. I've just looked at < www.webtourist.com > and working through links starting with "Know before you go" right through to Albany Australia, there is a superb collection of very relevant info. You could probably download what you need. Let me know - via VT internal email - if you don't get to that web-page and I'll give whatever assist you need. Good luck.

Hey Karen,
I check the link this end and its working fine. But its easy to do this via Google Search by typing in.....
"Where is Albany, Western Australia" and you should finds lots of links.

As for Aborginal people in Albany.... There are a few family groups around but most traditional groups remain outside of citys/towns to retain their traditional ways. As I suggested try a google search on either Aborginal in Western Australia or Aboriginal history in Western Australia and you should find some info...

If your still stuck...let me know your email address and I see what I can find for you in the way of links and more info..

Smile and enjoy

Hayden
