KL Hop On Hop Off vs Taxi (Which is cheaper)
Posted: Wed January 25, 2012 02:52 AM UTC
Hello VTers!!

So if I were going solo or with a buddy I know that Hoponhopoff is cheaper than taxi.

But as we are a group of 7, @ 38RMx5 (adult) and 17RMx2 (child, that would mean RM224 total.

I looked at the map: http://www.myhoponhopoff.com/images/mapbig.png and I found out that the places of our interests is grouped into two sections mostly, stops 12 to 16 and stops 20 to 22.

Now I am not sure but, I think stops 12 (National Museum) to 16 (Dataran Merdaka) are actually near each other and can take by walking.

And then we can ride train from Masjid Jamek LRT station to Titiwangsa Station to go to Stop 20 (Palace of culture and walk through Titiwangsa Lake and National Art Gallery, and further on to Kampung Baru.

Then take taxi to go to Petronas Tower as our last stop.

Is this doable?? We actually have two days so we can split the tour to have more time and make it more relaxing.

What do you think guys?

Practically it is possible if the weather is good and no rain, and will be a lot cheaper then Hop On Bus for the group of 7, just a note of advice, getting a taxi in KL with the meter on is virtually impossible, from Titiwangsa you can take the mono rail to Bukit Nanas station which is 10-15 minutes walk from The Twin Towers

Thank you Sham.

That is a very good note: if it does not rain. I will remember this. If it does, then Hop On Hop off we go.

when it rains in KL it is very hard and continue for quite long time, Hop on Bus Tickets are valid for 24 hours means if you start your trip (for example) at 2.00 PM you can still use the same ticket next day start the journey in the morning and visit the remaining sights

By the way, my name is Shams, not Sham :)

Hi,

To be honest most of the sights worth visiting are within walking distance from either train or mono stops, I don't really rate the Hop on Hop off bus, you can spend a lot of time waiting for the bus to turn up. Remember if you do use a taxi then you would need to hire two of them, not sure about the previous reply about it being virtually impossible to get the taxi to use a meter, I always find it easy!

I'm a local and I agree with the previous reply about the impossibility of making taxis to use meters! I HATE taking taxis in KL, as a result, except to the airport (to get away from it! LOL!).

If they do use the meter, they will find another way to fleece you, like take a round about route to your destination if you don't already know your way round the city. They check on this by asking which route you wish to take - to test your local knowledge! Argh!

I'd say take the Hop On Hop Off eventhough I've never taken it - since the route looks good to me :-) And remember the b****dy hot sun at the moment - walking under it can enervate your visitors :( Furthermore, it will save your energy from all the haggling you will need to make with not just one but TWO cab drivers! Never in my dreams would I attempt that!!

Hmm..

I wanted to take the bus, mainly for the experience but I am thinking how much time we will spend waiting for the next bus to arrive. Cause when we were in Dataran Merdaka last month, we saw one bus came by but no bus came after that, and we stayed in Merdaka for atleast an hour! Of course budget is also a big factor.

pgthompson is correct that the sights are near train stations, from google maps it seeems that way. Im just not sure how near haha.

I forgot to mention thought that I am with my 68 and 65 year old parents. They are up for walking, im just worried that it will be too hot, and we have a hectic schedule for the whole week.

Anyway, thank you for replying!! Any suggestions, new inputs, not only re:topic but KL travel tips, please let me know. :)

Hi,

I did live in KL for over 2 years, that was 15 months ago so I presume that the taxi drivers have changed there ways? When I lived there, there was only 4 occasions when I had to get another one because the driver would not use the meter. I used to use the taxi every day at least once.

2 years ago next month, my mother came to visit me from England, she was 73 then and we did the sights by using the train and tram, we also spent nearly a day just walking around Lake Garden and the Bird Park, just make sure you have plenty of water. I appreciate that not everyone is as agile as my mother but it can be done.

Enjoy Malaysia - I did!

Sorry to disappoint you @pg :( I've lived in KL since 1975 and, no, the cab drivers have not changed attitude since it's their grand father's road (as we cynically say here) - you were plain lucky! Esp being a Mat Saleh! ;)
