A ggod option is to wait to be there. As you disembark from the ferry you will find many people coming to you offering "domatia", rented rooms and even houses for rent. You can bargain there and visit them to choose.
A little risky though in high season... but it worked for me (looking for a single room)

Short-term or long-term? Have you tried contacting real estate offices in the area where you want to rent?

It would be short term, two or three months. I have not contacted anyone, I want to consider different options besides commercial websites.

Re: Sources for summer island rentals - modified post Posted: Sun January 15, 2012 05:55 PM UTC
Are you heading for a specific island and in which month?
If it is one of the popular ones accessible by air or short ferry journey, and if you need a house for your party rather than a studio room or small apartment you may not find it get suitable accommodation on arrival. Times are hard in Greece right now but you cannot expect rock botton prices. Tourism is all some people have to hang on to.
Whenever and wherever I am stuck in finding suitable accommodation and have exhausted searches of all my favourite letting sites I google - eg holiday house family of 5, 2 weeks(month)(place) and that way often get taken to an owners site that is not listed elsewhere or to local agencies.

No particular island, but Samos, naxos, may be options. I would like quieter islands. For example, I am not interested in Santorini nor Mykonos. An island with easy or reasonable access from Athens.

This was the first island I visited in the late 70s
http://www.aeginagreece.com/
It has developed since then but has easy access from Piraeus /Athens by ferry - you might find some leads to accommodation - but have still not indicated what kind or size accommodation you will require.

Best thing to do is ask the locals when you get to an island that you want to stay at. Rent a room first and then ask around. Go to a restaurant that you like and just ask if they know of anyone that has a house for rent, long term.

Thanks. We would need a one bedroom house: furnished, with a terrace with outside furniture to eat and spend time outside. Air conditioning, and not far from the beach.

When I was looking for accomodations in Peloponnese I found a good option the site www.homeaway.com. It list lots of property all around the world and usually the owner are locals.
I rented a lovely studio in Agio Nikolaos, Messinia for a real bargain last year.
About waiting to see what the offer is when you arrive at the port, it could work, but, as said before, it can be risky in the summer, also you have to be prepared to set on something very simple.
Happy travel

Air conditioning at a modest rent might not always be available - mayve a unit or fan in a bedroom.
I certainly second the recommendation for www.homeaway.com

These are great ideas. My plans are for the next or the following summer. I need to plan way in advance to see what is available. thanks so much. More ideas are welcome.

Realistically, your best chance to find affordable housing for several months on a quiet island is to go there, find a cheap room for the interim and start asking around. I've done this twice for 6 months (before the Schengen Rules) and have found that the offer of paying in full in advance goes a long way to lowering the price. Obviously you have to be sure you're where you want to be, but I've no doubt that once you find the right place you'll be successful as long as your choice isn't one of the more popular summer destinations where the property owners know they can make a lot more money from fast turnover. Because of the cost of electricity you will most likely have to pay extra for A/C, so be sure of the agreement you make. Also check carefully for good water pressure, hot water availability, clear drain lines and the presence of sewer smells in the bathroom. These are chronic problems in areas where tourism is not as developed

Hi, I know it will not be easy to find a quiet island in the summer. But perhaps a house in a quieter spot not too far from the beach. air conditioning in the bedroom will be just fine. I would not need it in the rest of the house. I will keep on looking since I have quite a bit of time; you you guys have given me lots of ideas.

<<<Where do locals find houses for rent? >>>
we usually arrive at an island and ask there but for long term vacations (which means more than 2-3 weeks) we book in advance, usually we ask someone that knows someone in the place we're heading and then we call, no internet needed :)
but dont worry, if you arrive early in the season (may-june) you will find a room even in popular destinations
