ljubljana to venice - need help
Posted: Tue January 10, 2012 11:17 PM UTC
In May we will be spending 10 days in Slovenia then travelling from Ljubljana to Venice. The train is difficult to we are looking for an alternative. There seems to be two choices and I need to know which is the more reliable.

One is a company called Go Opti who seem to run a shuttle although I can's find anything on the net about this company.

The other is a bus company called DRD Bus. A few reviews online that say this company doesn't seem too reliable.

Can anyone tell me if they know about these two companies and which one we should trust to get us to Venice ?

Wish I can be more helpful for you but the time I was there I found it to be a great country. You, being there for 10 days I am sure you will find out the same thing,..plus from "word of mouth" through meeting people you should find many ways of getting to Venice. The people there are very helpful and friendly.

The time I was there I knew someone there and made arrangements for him to picked me up in Venice and then he drove me to slovenia.Had a blast ! Anyway if I remember it only took a couple hours one way.

So it really isn't far. Here's the link to the shuttle company http://goopti.com/ your better off paying a little extra for a shuttle then hassle with buses.

You can also take a boat across and takes 2 to 4 hrs. depending ?.
Also not sure if they run seasonal ? Try http://www.viamare.com/mediterranean-ferry-services.php

Hope this might help you .Have fun and safe travels.

Italy doesn't want you to come, at least judged by the way they have been treating cross border public transport. There are as of this year no longer any trains at all from Slovenia to Italy...

Anyway, the DRD bus to Mestre seems OK to me. My experience with buses in that part of Europe has been good. But alternatively you could go to Trieste, and take a train from there.
The website of the Trieste Bus station has times: http://www.autostazionetrieste.it/

There are direct buses from Ljubljana to Trieste. There is also a bus from Sezana, and frequent buses from Koper, both which can be reached by train from Ljubljana.

Hello,

Many people have used the DRD bus so that seems ok, you can try to reserve seats beforehand or just turn up earlier. Make sure you have your ticket on you as i've heard they get a little surly if you don't hehe bus drivers are the same everywhere!! :)

GoOpti are recommended in Slovenia so i guess they are ok from Venice as well but quite costly I imagine and as you say, hard to find anything.

Train is quite easy and if you have time, explore Trieste or Gorizia\Nova Gorica along the way. Easiest option is train to Gorizia, then over to Nova Gorica and get a bus to Ljubljana.

See www.sloveniaforyou.com/TouristAlerts.htm
My son also used them for transfers to Metalkamp from Ljubljana and it was excellent.

Hi Bob,

We took the DRD bus from Venice to Ljubljana recently (30 jan 2011). The entire trip took almost exactly 4 hours, although the driver would tell you it would take only about 2 hours. Price was €25.00/pax.

We often see a DRD vehicle everytime we go to the main bus station. I suggest you approach one the drivers and ask for more info.

Have fun in Ljubljana. It's a great city and the people are the best!

My friend recently used this service, 33 EUR one way:
http://www.zup-prevozi.eu/
info@zup-prevozi.eu
They organize transfers according to demand, so you should email them your flight times and they'll let you know if they have enough passengers interested to organize a transfer.

Another one that replied with reasonable offer was Sionsi, 35 eur one way
http://sionsi.si/vsebina/71/ze_doloceni_termini.html
also best way is to email them your flight arrival/departure times
email: info@sionsi.si

I went to Ljubljana last week (through Venice) having no idea that there is not anymore train connection between them, a Slovenian friend recomend to use GoOpti as last minute solution because they are new and reliable.I booked on line at www.goopti.com
At first I was worried because they do not have a fixed timetable, you actually state the earliest possible time of departure or the latest time of arrival so they reply you with a confirmation mail statiting that your departure is quarantee between this hours and let you know the excact time one day before.
So I called them and the employee explained me that the time is confirmed 24hrs before according to the one that will satisfied most of the customers.Indeed one day prior to departure I received both mail and sms with the excact time, place and the drivers mobile.
I may sound like a freak, but I was not afraid of losing my money(25euro one way) only that I wouldn't have a way to leave Venice. Finally all those fears were just stupid, they came on time, transfer me to Ljubljana in just 3 hours and I also use them to return back to Venice.
About DRD I don't know but GoOpti was ok for me and I totally recommend them.
