August in Slovenia
Posted: Mon January 9, 2012 09:49 AM UTC
We are planning on spending a couple of weeks in Slovenia in August. We don't have a lot of choice on the timing. Are there heaps of tourists there in August and if so, any recommendations on where to go that isn't too busy? We'll be travelling by bus or train. Thankyou

No so touristy as Croatia, maybe just Ljubljana, Blerd and the caves but bearable indeed.

Place I' d recommend (apart from the mentioned), Piran and Koper (by the sea), Maribor in the east, Ptuj and Celje as well as Skofja Loka.

You can have a look at my pages if you wish.

Well, August is one of those months in high season, but what can you do... visit lake Bohinj rather than lake Bled and have a walk around, you can find lonely spots along the trail, and scenery is beautiful. If it's warm enough, you can swim.
Go to visit nice little town Radovljica, not far from Bled, it doesn't get that much tourists, but has something to see in good few hours. So doeas Kamnik. Except that, Kranj and Skofja Loka in that part of the state (North West). If you want to spend more time in nature, Triglav NP has a lot of trails and remote valleys, and if you like rivers, Soca valley is trully beautiful.
Still on Western part, closer to sea, go to visit historic Hrastovlje, and there are plenty of little village on Karst to roam around. Village Osp lays under the rock, and has good climbing walls, but the setting itself is nice, far from crowds. If you like horse, take a look into Lipica; if you like caves, there are plenty of them in that part too... nevertheless, Skocjanske jame are one of most beautiful ones and though they're visited by many tourists, they're worth to see. Villages like Stanjel and Vipava town, and Vipavski kriz are also among less visited, though pretty and old.
One natural beauty there also gets less tourists, but it's real interesting: the lake Cerknica (it''s dried half year or so); a few km from it, Rakov Skocjan valley can be nice day our in nature.
If looking towards eastern part of country, Ptuj is a must, Maribor as cultural capital of Europe this year will have interesting program, and there are nice wine roads near, some of them you could do by bike. Several other choices in NW could be wine roads near Ljutomer and Ormoz, done as day trips by cycling or walking or taxi/car.

There are of course more places worth seeing, i only mentioned few ones...
two weeks is kind of a lot of time for Slovenia, but good that you go for it, since there's lots of good places to visit and local transport to remoter ones is not so efficient.
v.
