Day Trips from Antwerp
Posted: Sat January 7, 2012 06:12 PM UTC
Hello,
We will be in Antwerp for two days in May and would like to take some easy day trips by train/bus from Antwerp. We like quaint towns that we can spend the day strolling around and experience the local charm of Belgium. We will be visiting Brugge earlier in our trip. We are looking for some "best kept secret" places without all the tourist.
Thank you for your help,
Susan

Gent is nice and then around Antwerp you have small towns like Geel that is nice but only do my trips by car,do not know the train. Brugge is an excellent choice.
Geel is a nice walkable town, with nice shops and a market square fullof restos around the church, nice.
nice interaction train station at Antwerp or Antwerpen

and belgian rails says they have a train station in Geel from antwerp

I'd recommend a day trip to Ypres if you are at all interested in World War 1.

How about Brlgium's oldest town - Tongeren.
Easy direct trainaccess from Antwerp.

Nice little beghuinage, basilica and lots of remains from Roman times.
The splendid gallo-roman museum has been awarded with the title "European museum of the year 2011".
This is the link to my page about Tongeren (not yet completed due to lack of time ... Sorry) :

If this is the first time to Antwerp, I would think you will find more to do and see then you can during two days. The suroundings are also very interesting.
I would recommend a visit to the little city Lier. It is reachable by train (19 minutes?) or by bus (departing from the Rooseveltplaats, 40 minutes?). This is a city with a lot of history and so cute. Everything is at walking distance. The musea are very cheap and you should not miss the wonder clock although I heard. The beguinage is wonderful and pitoresque. The little canals over the river are cute. I think May is a wonderful time to visit it.
It is really worth a day trip and you can even do it on a lazy afternoon.
I am not sure if you can already go on the little canals by boat. But the guidance is not done in English, unless on special demand with a paid guide.

I see I deleted a part of my answer. It is possible that the museum of the wonderclock is stil in renovation.

Trips to Tongeren and Ypres are too far and takes too much traveltime. Ghent and Leuven would be within reasonable reach and are worth visiting.
I can't tell about Geel, shame shame but I still have to go visit it.
