Mathura or Agra

Hi All

I'll soon be heading back to India for my 7th trip which most of it will spent travelling around Rajasthan but first port of call after leaving Delhi will be Agra, once again I want to get another look at the Famous Taj Mahal as this will be the last time I will see it.

My question is has anybody stayed overnight in Mathura about 90mins away by bus and is worth it or would it best to visit Mathura as a day trip from Agra. I have been to Agra before and know it is not a great town stay in for a couple of nights, I'm kind of itchin' to spend the night in Mathura, just wondered if anybody else has stayed their and if so can recommend any cheap accommodation.

Thanks

U should cover Mathura and Vrindavan both in a day and then overnight at Vrindavan. Lot to see in both the places. Krishna Janam Bhumi in Mathura and ISKON temple, Bhihari Ji temple in Vrindavan are main attractions. Take taxi from Agra or Delhi, as Mathura is on the way. Vrindavan is app. 18 KMs from the highway on the left while coming from Delhi to Agra.

1. Honestly hope this will NOT be your last visit to such a wonderful monument to LOVE. Hope you will see it again after this time!

2. Never stayed in Mathura and really don't know if it's worth it or not. But do know that the 'peras' (milk sweets) of Mathura are hot favourites in North India. Always used to grab a bagful whilst travelling from Guwahati to New Delhi during my University days!

Thanks for the info Ad, looks like I will spend one night in Mathura.

Hi Anil,

Yes it is time to make my final visit to the Taj Mahal. my first visit was miserable and wet but the 2nd visit was 100% perfect and the sunset was awesome, so on this final visit I want to see the Sunrise which I havan't seen yet and I would think I get another chance for sunset again but it is time to call it a day with the Taj Mahal.

I do plan another trip to Rajasthan sometime in the future because I would like to see the famous camel fair festival in Pushkar, I've meet many travellers who say it is a must see but the event is held in Oct/Nov time so i won't be their on this trip.

I am in someway am trying to finish off India so I can focus on neigbouring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal and hopefully one day Bhutan but the more I keep reading about India the more I want to see, like Shilong another area of India I havn't seen or heard much about, but interested to see, perhaps another trip somewhere in the future.

Accommodation in Mathura is available and is cheaper then Agra but is mostly lower budget class hotels/guest house (500-800Rs). No continental breakfast will be available. Agra is full of class hotels starting from Rs. 1000 onwards..Normally people prefer to stay in Agra so as to enjoy Taj Mahal early morning or may be night view of taj mahal.

i stayed in hotel booked by my agent near to Pizza Hut,Very good hotel and decently prices 1500-1800 INR.

Thanks

My plan now is to stay one night in Mathura and stay the next night in Agra.

My budget will be a lot less than 1000rs per night, more like 300-500 rupees per night. I don't need TV and all the fancy stuff in more upscale room has, just the basics will do.

Thanks for the reply.
