Curitiba is usually not considered a place of much interest to tourists.
If your trip is in the near future, consider a few days in fairly nearby Florianopolis/Santa Catarina island (which has good weather at this season, but can be cold in S.A. winter), an area known for its beaches.

Note: If you are planning to travel during Carnaval (February 17th until February 21st, 2012), it is VERY late to be booking accomodation in any popular destination. Call directly to hotels in any location where you are thinking of staying to find out about availability. Usually Carnaval accomodation is sold in multi-night packages, paid in full in advance.

Curitiba is considered by most as a very safe and profitable place to raise a family in Brazil. Other than that, it has little to offer, IMO. So what to do with your time in a place I would not choose to spend time in the first place....well.....maybe look here:

How to get to Florianopolis from Curitiba? Take a bus or fly.
I'm sure some research online or with a guidebook might give you enough info on which to base a choice of hotel/pousada. I would suggest staying in one of the towns on the island, rather than in the city.
You could look here for reviews:

Happy travels.
