Yes yes yes..... Posted: Thu December 29, 2011 02:46 PM UTC
WE HAVE INTERNET AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, i know that for most of you that is a completely normal state of life but here... I haven't been online from a 'home base' (or semi-permanent travel base) since 2005! Here in Burma (Myanmar) internet has been shaky for years although it has gotten quite good here in Yangon for the last few years. Since a few months gmail, youtube, etc are officially accessible (so we don't have to reroute left-right-and-centre). In some places you could have internet even years ago but they are way outside our budget.
Now, we have (drum-roll) DIAL-UP. OK, lousy speed (I doubt many of you have the fantastic fastness of between 31 and 49 kb per second. And I have been disconnected regularly this night. But, I AM online and man does it feel good....

Congratulations. You really look happy. Enjoy.
It is true that most of us give several things(not only the web) for granted...and they are not.
Now...start asking your company for higher speed! ;-)

I know (to some extent)how you feel. I remember very well how it felt to actually get dial-up internet access at home. It wasn't so very long ago for me either, perhaps...ummm...8 years or so?
Enjoy! :-)

Sandra,
I'm really happy for you.
I once started at the NET on 300 Bd bulletin boards and was happy when I got a 56k dial up connection.
VT still supports very much the slower connections, so stay here!
See you around,
PJ

Great news Sandra.
Having personally suffered the vagaries of Burmese internet, I know what you must have felt like. You say a few of the more popular sites are now officially accessible, that is good. I am presuming here you no longer have to re-route through China?
I don't know, we get very few reports here in UK, but I get the feeling that things are getting a little "easier" in that lovely country now. Without compromising yourself obviously, would that be a reasonable assessment? I cannot wait to get back there. As a side issue, the baby looks absolutely gorgeous, she is a little darling and I wish her all the best the world has to offer.
no need to answer this post unless, of course, you really want to show off your new whizzbang internet connection!

I am one of the few that still views VT through a home dial-up connection. It is one of the web sites that actually works pretty well over dial-up, so long as you don't try to load the VT home page (the slide show slows things down).
Glad to hear you now have some access!

Things are definitely improving here... ;-) And of course i do want to show of the fact that I can actually be online more now. I can still remember the VT Friday bar of year and years ago.... That was good fun...
PJ, I remember some of those days too. I started my internet virgin years with a 56 kb modem too. But usually you go forwards and not backwards ;-) Heck, I had some great connection time when I worked in IT.... But after so many years of internet cafes and time online between lessons, this feels super.....
