Where to stay??
Posted: Mon December 26, 2011 06:47 PM UTC
My wife and I are traveling to San Diego in February for a long weekend, and I am not sure where the best place is to stay. I see many different neighborhoods, so I would like a place with some night life and avoid driving if possible. I think this is pushing me to the Gaslamp area but the hotels I have looked at so far don't include parking which is a pet peeve of mine. Should I look at different neighborhood, or another hotel in the Gaslamp? Convenient parking would be nice, and it would be nice to know which hotels include it.

Additionally, do you really need a car to see all of the sites in San Diego. I haven't planned it out yet, but the Zoo and Sea World are for sure. I would assume we will hit some of the museums, and ???

Gaslamp would be my first choice but parking can be troublesome; most hotels I've stayed in charge for parking. ( Typically stay at the Mission Valley Hilton nea Auto Park Mall).

There's a Best Western if I recall correctly on Ash near Little Italy. The neighborhood is close to the freeway so that may be a bit noisy. On street parking is doable but hard to find typically and most has meters. I'd check with the Marriotts in the area as well.

There is bus transportation all over, but having a car is most convenient to get to most venues in a timely manner.

Thanks for the information. I decide to go with The Courtyard in the end. The price was reasonable, and location looked good. I'll probably end up getting a car, but paying $30/day to park seems crazy.

This may not be useful now but have you taken a look at the hotels and motels at Hotel Circle? There is a wide choice of hotels in most price ranges so, easy to find something within any budget. I believe that much of the parking at these hotels is free. There is a SD Trolley station located here with plenty of free parking. Just drive over to the station, park and take the SD Trolley to get around.

Though the Trolley does not go to the Zoo or to SeaWorld, it does stop at bus hubs, so, easy to take the bus you'll need to get to most of the places you want to go. I'll mention that the SD Zoo offers free parking, but SeaWorld charges for parking.

Most of the best museums will be found in Balboa Park along with the SD Zoo. It too has free parkiing throughout, but sometimes the lots are crowded so go early.

Even some of the more corporate hotels (Residence Inn, Crowne Plaza) in the Hotel Circle area charge for parking, some of the traveler-oriented hotels (La Quinta and Travelodge) likely will not charge for parking and will provide a limited continental breakfast. If my budget was tight and I was travelling with a family, I would pick a Hotel Circle hotel. If its just the two of you, then Gaslamp should be fine.

If night life is your focus, I would stay in the Gaslamp and walk around. The Courtyard (I believe its off of Broadway near the US Grant and Horton Plaza?) is on the edge of the Gaslamp, so you'll have to walk a few blocks, but its not too far, just make sure you walk south near Horton Plaza instead of on Broadway (just more industrial and less to see). Just another note that the parking at most of the Gaslamp hotels is valet, and not self-parking, so you'll have to wait for that too.

Another hotel which you may like a bit more is the Embassy Suites, also downtown, which faces Seaport Village but is further of a walk away from the Gaslamp. The advantage is that it has a self parking lot around the corner (see Google) for those who ride the railroad out of town, thus you pay about half the price for parking and can get your car yourself instead of waiting for a queue of people waiting for their cars. Plus it has a nice breakfast included in the rate and you get a suite.

You will need to drive to the Zoo and Sea World (easier accessible from a Hotel Circle hotel). Don't forget to visit Little Italy and Hillcrest as well on your drive from Downtown to the Zoo.

Last February rather than stay at Mission Beach, Hotel Circle or the Gaslamp in San Diego I decided to try something new. I stayed out at Liberty Station at the Homewood Suites. Wow! There are two new hotels out there a Homewood Suites and a Courtyard. I have now stayed in both of them and I prefer the Homewood Suites because of the free breakfast and larger rooms.

The Homewood Suites had the friendliest of staff, picked me up at the airport, drove me downtown and were very helpful. There is FREE PARKING, a great breakfast and a free get together with food on week nights. It was also very quiet in my room. What I especially liked about the hotel was that it was remote with great views of the harbor. There was a great trail leading from the hotel along the bay that you could walk along that was great. They have a great roof top area too which they allowed me to use while there was an airshow nearby on a Saturday afternoon. Overall a much better stay that the traditional spots in San Diego.

Check out the web site below;

I noted that Trip Advisor ranks this place 4th out of 242 hotels and the Courtyard next door 5th. Staying there I know why!
