Curitiba during Carnaval! What to do?
Posted: Sun December 25, 2011 10:06 PM UTC
Hey everybody,

I'm comming down to Brazil during Carnaval for the first time ever. Don't want to deal with the insanity of Carnaval in Rio, so I've decided that I'll catch a flight down to Curitiba during the main Carnaval dates of Feb. 17th to 21st. Are there any particular events that usually take place in Curitiba during Carnaval that are worth attending .... or should I just take a little trip to Ilha do Mel and chill over there?

Any suggestions?
Thanks - Skull!

Here's a site in Portuguese with some photos of the 'desfile' in Curitiba and some comments, which may give you a better idea:

Looks absolutely serene - boring even. Maybe everyone goes out to Ilha do Mel to party.

Well either by accident or sheer perversity, you have chosen one of the dullest cities in the entire country.

The FEB museum is very good, the Niemeyer museum is worth a visit and if you get really bored you can sit in the Passeio Público and watch what are perhaps the world's oldest prostitutes plying their trade amongst the cages of dowdy looking birds and rather unhappy looking monkeys.

I have been to Curitiba a few times before and have already visited the main sites. But since I've never been there for Carnaval I was wondering if they usually do anything special. Yes, it is an ongoing joke that folks who don't like Carnanval go to Curitita during that time. I've never experienced Carnaval so I can't say one way or the other.

I personally happen to like Curitiba. It's a nice mid-sized town. Not sure why anyone would hang out at the Passeio Publico, especially not for prostitutes. Picking up women off the street is such a lowbrow affair. A refined city such as Curitiba has far more refined establishments. Don't you agree?

Oh I quite agree, I was merely pointing out that in a city with a dearth of interesting sites, the public spectacle of anicient working girls picking up equally ancient clientele will pass the time for at least five minutes.

There's actually a contest in "Largo a Ordem" to pick the best "marchinha e carnaval" (little carnival songs, usually with dubious meanings). You can take a look on the pics, https://picasaweb.google.com/michaelbkhan/1stDay , I had a friend comming over for the carnival season, luckly, this carnival parade happens 2 weeks and 1 week before the actual carnival holiday, so you can keep with the ilha do mel plans
