Yes, you can take train or bus from Krakow airport to the centre (and shuttles and taxis too, of course).
I prefer the train, although on my first visit I took the ordinary bus. It was fine, though it took longer. You'll have to walk about 200m to the station, although there are also shuttle buses (not really necessary). Ticket machine inside the train, or you can buy your ticket from the guard.
Info about airport transport in English here:
http://www.krakowairport.pl/en/60/4/176/Access-to-the-airport
Trains go to Krakow Glowny, about 5-10 mins walk from Rynek Glowny (the main market square). There is a bus station next to the railway station, but I got off the ordinary bus earlier because it was better for my hotel.
I can't help with hostels, I'm afraid: I stayed at hotels.
Krakow is lovely...enjoy! :-)

If you read my review and you are traveling by public transportation from the airport and you want to stay at a hostel.....so close, so easy, so nice. I cannot recommend this place higher. If the link does not work it is greg and toms hostel right near the train and bus station, so easy from the airport and so easy to walk anywhere down town Krakow. Could not be more perfect to me.

I don't think there are any hotels in central Krakow within your price range: it's a very popular short-break budget carrier destination, and prices reflect that. But if you do decide to splash out a bit then both the Rezydent and the Pollera are fine, the latter with beautiful and original Art Deco stained-glass. Info and reviews here:

Make sure you spend an evening (and several hours exploring) in Kazimierz too, for the history, the heritage and the music.

Re: New destination Posted: Wed December 21, 2011 06:46 AM UTC
Personally I wouldn't bother with the arranged bar and pub crawls that your hostel offers - do you really want to spend your time in Krakow in the company of other travellers?? Get out by yourself and find your own Krakow - there are over 300 bars within a kilometre radius of the main square and even I have only found about 10% of them.
You've had some good pointers already and I'll add that Kazimierz is definitely a must - to hell with the culture and history that's where the best bars are - HIC!

EllenH Sorry reading one your replies Hostel Hero is an IPHONE App similar
to Hostel.com that lists hostels and lets you look at prices and what facilities
they offer then has a facility to book and pay 10% dep with balance in local currency----used it thru Africa and Sth America without a hassle

@ Ellen and John
Who is Maciek?
Coming back to the point:
You can consider staying not in the center (Krakow is really compact comparing with other cities). You can start from Podgorze area- mind you non-tourist Drukarnia venue at Nadwislanska st.
If you look even furhter- there is a night bus network, which local party animals often use.
Also you can try PTSM (YHO) hostels.

John no fear of me doing a pub/bar crawl with a group as years of travel have
honed my skills of finding interesting bars in many a city or village
Same goes for sniffing [strange choice of words] out a good feed!!!!!
Have been to Europe four times from 1977 to 1987 when wall was up and the East
a difficult place to get into as adversed to now so this trip which will start
in Poland and end in Hungary --woowee am stoked

If you think vodka is something alcoholic but bland then Zubrowka will change that opinion but beware it is powerful stuff. As to draft beers most bars will only stock their favoured brand and so simply "Pivo Prosche" (sp!) suffices when ordering. The main two Zwiec and Tyskie are pretty similar (although some people have their own preference) but if you come across a beer called "Dog in the Fog", which I think is brewed by Tyskie, then give that a try - it's one of my favourites.

Re: New destination Posted: Fri December 23, 2011 12:16 AM UTC
Combining "Dog in the Fog" and one of my Polish favourites "Bigos" (a cabbage stew with whatever the hunter has brought home) search out a bar called Oldsmobil on Sw Tomasza. It's a bit of a squiggle of a route just off the eastern corner of the Rynek Glowny but the squiggle means that it is much more of a locals bar than a tourist one. They also do excellent "Pierogi" which is a bit like ravioli, and their "Kielbasa" (white sausage) makes for a an excellent stomach lining. Don't worry about having too many beers there because "The dog in the fog always finds its way home."
For street eats the "Zapiekanka" (a bit like French bread pizza) stalls are the best - the ones around the old market in Kazmierz are particularly good.
