Would you recommend hotel close to Times Square or would it be better for me in the East Village/Lower East Side?
Been to the city already so I’m looking for more relax quality place where we can stroll around at night as well as close to the local cafes, restaurants and pubs.
Any recommendations for 4 or 5 stars hotels? I guess there wouldn't be too many in that area, so alternative could be actually private or any special bed & breakfast if you know any.

I am suggesting that you stop at the Abington Square Guesthouse (http://www.abingdonguesthouse.com/index.html). Charming Abington Square Park is steps away from the guesthouse’s door.

For the relaxed visit you seek this is the place to stop in Greenwich Village.

You can walk about at night, sampling the many restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops of The Village. Yet, major subway lines, taking you to more bustling parts of town are nearby. At 14th St. & Eighth Ave. the Blue Line A, C and E trains can take you uptown or downtown. The Hudson River Park is also nearby for a view of the might Hudson and its river life.

If you are looking for a quiet and very chic hotel in the Lower East side you might consider the Thompson LES. Great location close to restaurants and clubs. Friendly staff and comfortable rooms. There is a great music venue next door.Rooms are quiet. Here is the link;

I stayed at the Paramount and it was very nice. It is only about a block from Times Square.

Hi

We stayed at the Four Points Sheraton, 326 W 40th. It's very nice although the rooms are small. We were there over the September 11th period (this year); walked around late/early. No problems although this would depend on your own level of comfort. Great location just off 8th ave. Close to subway stop. I would recommend it.

I recommend upper west side near Central Park and w.81st. Very laid back and gives you the vibe of living in Manhattan. Hotel to stay at is The Excelsior. You'll be next to the Museum of Natural History and you'll be next to the B/C lines that can easily get you to lower east side or times sq. If you wanna go downtown, Broadway/79th's a short walk where you can take the 1 line.

If you are looking to walk around late at night Times Square or the Village is fine. Four to five star hotels are not in either place. As for which ones there is the Mandarin Oriental by Columbus Circle or the Trump hotel across the street from the Mandarin. There is the Plaza or Pierre on 5th Avenue across he street from each other. And there is the 4 Seasons on East 57th Street. These are probably the top hotels in NYC. The Casablanca in Times Square is a really good hotel as well and is highly underrated due only to being in Times Sq.

The village really does not have any great hotels however since the subways or cabs make it easy to get a round you should have no issues staying in any of the above then going back each night from wherever you may be in the city to your hotel.
