Postojna or Skocjan

Hello.

Which provides a more awesome experience between Postojna and Skocjan cave? We only have limited time in Ljubljana but would really love to visit one of these caves.

Hope to hear your opinions. Thanks.

We were there this year... but only Postojna.

I think which ever you choose you will be inspired. Postojna was quite busy...we went in by a special train and then were sorted into groups by language. Bit difficult to hear unless you were close to the guide.

I thought Skojcan was much cooler than Postojna, we visited both of them in one day along with Predjama Castle. If I had to pick one I'd do the extra bit of driving and see Skojcan, if you have the full day, get up early, see Skojcan when they open and then head back to Ljub. via Postojna which offers more frequent tours.

The thing I didn't like about Postojna was that they had sort of Disneyfied it, the little tourist train, all of the shops and stuff around it. What I thought was really cool about Skojcan was that the cave experience was much less touristy, it seemed like we had been dropped into the world of the Lord of the Rings, it's vast, it's dark, really I thought any minute that little creature was going to pop out and hiss "Precious"

Skocjan was awesome, did not do the other one but we decided to go to that place on the day they were calling for bad weather since it was underground it wouldn't matter, right? LOL...It was pouring rain and the entrance to the caves is 500 meters from where you buy your tickets. We were pretty much the only ones without an umbrella and we were totally drenched by the time we reached the caves. Then spent 2 hours in the underground temperature of the caves, that part was pretty miserable but it was so great that I still came away from it as a wonderful experience.

Thanks Ellen. May I know when did you visit Skocjan? Is it easy to travel by bus?

We were there the first week of October. We had a car so I do not know about the ease of a bus. There were plenty of buses there, but they may have been tours or something.

Hello VTers!

In reference to the query, I found this great little blog about the caves that was quite amusing and almost made me spill my coco! http://www.sloveniaforyou.com/RonaleesTips.htm
I think she prefers Postojna but I could be wrong!

I have visited both. They are very different. I loved both but I fully agree with all what have been written by others. However, there is in Postojna a museum of cave animals (especially with the "human fish"). Most visitors skip it and while the caves have thousands of visitors, the museum has hardly a handful, which is a real pity as, IMHO, it is the best part of Postojna. When you buy the tickets, you can chose cave alone, cave plus Prejama or cave plus Predjama plus museum. But the museum can be visited separatly from the cave : you can buy a ticket for the museum alone.

Thank you for the new input.

My wife and I were able to visit Skocjan cave. We didn't have the time to visit Postojna anymore, but Skocjan alone made our day.

The shuttle bus from Divaca to Skocjan wasn't timed with the bus schedule, so we had to take a "taxi" (which was nothing more than a private car owned by the gentleman manning the train station) who tried to overcharge us with €40.00 for a short 3km trip. We managed to haggle it down to €20.00.

The cave itself is wonderful. Our only disappointment was that picture taking isn't allowed inside.

I am disappointed to hear about the taxi ripoff, we found the people in Slovenia to be more then generous and accommodating. I understood why they did not allow the picture thing and respected it although the girl in front of us certainly did not and it was most annoying.

Oh. Wifey and I have nothing but praises for Slovenes. With the exception of the gentleman manning the train station at Divaca, They're just the kindest and warmest people we've had ever encountered.

We enjoyed Slovenia so much in large part because of her people. They're always ready with a big smile. People we don't know waved at and say hello to us. They'd talk to us and offered to assist us without us asking for it. They're simply fantastic!!!

I already told my wife that I'd like to include Slovenia again in one of our future trips.
