Carmela, the xmas eve mass in the church in the main square would be fabulous if you can get in there.
Best of luck
either that or the cathedral at the castle

Carmen, I can't help you with the restaurant but one little advice about the mass - even so Kosciol Mariacki on the main square is beautiful and surely it would be wonderful to take a part in the mass there I'm afraid you won't be able to get inside as there will be really many people. So you will have to stay outside and Christmas eve night can be pretty cold in Krakow. I'd rather choose smaller church.

In order to get a seat (not a standing place) you should come much earlier than midnight- probably even 30 min. will be too late. The most known churches will be extremely crowded. There are some 'less popular' churches still worth to visit.Still I'm not sure if you can avoid the crowd.
There should be Christmas Eve dinners in some restaurants, or certainly you may use catering service.
Events: There will be Christmas open air market on the main square, locals visit churches and nativity cribs.Boxing Day- probably all museums will be opened, so why not to visit Krakow History Museum and traditional local cribs contest exibition. There should be carols concerts in churches as well.

Thanks Matiek, I was worried all restaurants would be closed. If we can even try to taste a tipical xmas one, even better :-)
I remember the little shops at the square, and I read about how nice is the Xmas market so I am looking forward :-) I read about the cribs, I guess it is like our "belen" (I miss that in Berlin, I have not see many).
thanks to all for your help :-)

There are some restaurants open. Which one I don't know, as I don't go there for Christmas Eve. Certainly ones in hotels. Booking in advance may be wise- not due to the high demand of locals for it, but as it can be organized as a special event (I don't have any experience with it).

As I liked your a bit unusual post (the usual ones are like 'how to get to Wieliczka salt mine or Auschwitz KL?'), I searched on the Internet a bit. Surprisingly, it wasn't easy to find something. No big demand on Christmas Eve dinners is a good sign about Polish society as it is still a family matter.
So far I found such places wich probably organize something.
1.Percheron Restauracja, plac Kossaka.
700m from Rynek, good reviews at Gastronauci.pl portal.
Here is the offer in Polish:
http://www.percheron.pl/pdfx/wigilia%202011.pdf
The main page in English:
http://www.percheron.pl/?lang=en
2.Galaxy Hotel and Restaurant ul Gesia (~~700m from Kazimierz)
http://www.galaxyhotel.pl/en/hotel/special-offers/family-christmas
3. Not certain about it:
Hotel Poleski restaurant
http://www.hotelpoleski.pl/
Perhaps it will be more offers in upcoming days.
It is always better contact the place in advance, clarify, getting info about menu, price, time and booking.
After the dinner you can take a stroll to one of the nice churches (also ones in Kazimierz or Wesola districts are interesting) for the midnight mass.
If you are lucky for Christmas day check also:
http://misa-en-espanol.prv.pl/
It may be only every second Sunday in a month.
If you are lucky (and miss it in Spain) with snow scenery (still not snow here) you can take a stoll (also as a combination with a public bus service) to Las Wolski (a forest, but also a park within the city limits) on Christmas Day and visit strict kamedul monastery. Women are allowed to visit it this day.

Re: Christmas Eve in Krakow Posted: Wed December 7, 2011 02:33 PM UTC
Thanks for the links I will check now :-) and I know what you mean about "unusual" post. I get many emails of people asking how to see the whole spain in 7 days! Well in 40 years I have not managed lol how can I suggest anything for 7 days? ;-)
I had some answers from a couple of restaurants, some positive others negative, I could book them or wait till the 22nd when we arrive to check the places in advance. I also think that is good that they are closed and still a family day, thats one fo the reasons we are going to Poland. I am sure my mum is going to feel more at home in Krakow than in Berlin, while she visit us, More Xmas spirit
I guess this is not the right moment to ask you how to get to the mines lol (just kidding)

So only to the mines... I guess you have been already there;-) .Commuting locals mainly by frequent buses and mini buses. I would rather take the train if the station were close to my hotel.
Spain in 7 days- actually, funny and surprisingly that's my current subject. How to visit Spain within 6 days? If my father's health matters go in the right direction, we (my wife and two teenagers) will arrive to Madrid for 6 days in late February.Madrid, Salamanca, Segovia, Toledo (and Aranjuez, Escorial, Avila) and skateparks for one of us. Too much of it! It seems to be impossible- but I want to see them all!

Re: Christmas Eve in Krakow Posted: Thu December 8, 2011 09:03 AM UTC
I have just find out that there will be some events/folk concerts on Rynek: 22.12 at 14 and a so-called 'parade' from Barbakan at 16.15, 24.12 at noon Adam (Mickiewicz)'s nameday, 26.12 at 13 carolls singing.
Mind you also the nativity scenes live ;-) at Franciscan monastery at the fron of Bishop's Palace. It always overcrowded.
In a non-snow dry day you can also have a walk to Zakrzowek (alongside Wisla or by public transport).
