American woman traveling solo next week in Alexandria -- need advice
Posted: Wed November 30, 2011 11:38 PM UTC
Hi.

I am an American woman traveling alone for a week in Alexandria (next week). I am meeting up with my husband, who is traveling on business at the end of that week. Together he & I will go to Cairo, Luxor, Sinai peninsula, the Petra & onward.

I have the right clothes & attitude -- I've been to other Islamic countries before. But there are some things that I cant seem to find info about:

1. Are self-guided tours OK? Are there any specific places I should avoid?
2. Whats the best neighborhood for someone in my situation to stay?
3. Will the weather really be too bad for diving?
4. If I did go diving, what's the most culturally-appropriate swimwear? I hate offending people or attracting unwanted attention.
5. Any other tips for the rest of the trip with my hubby?

This is the adress of another VT member who lives in Alexandria. He is a friend of me. A professor in old languages. I am sure he can help you out! Contact him and if he doesn't respond come back to me. He is not very regular on VT. I have his phone number and will give him a call.

Good luck, Dora.

I went to Alex September 2011 for 3 days.

It’s a more laid back city, the amazing sight are the beech, which goes on for a long time.

I think you will enjoy your self – there has been protest that was taking place in the city, best to read American Travel web site advice & International news.

Egyptian man see a White American woman – they could possible that you will get chat up) it happens more in Cairo) but Just say NO NO NO or Arabic LA LA LA) you will be fine.

I took the 9am Train from Cairo to Alexandria, which cost me 35 Egyptian pounds = 5.90 USD second class, because the first class was full.

On the way back from Alexandria – Cairo I paid 50 Egyptian pound= 8.40 USD) which I took the 1pm Train to Cairo, that was the first class.

Total train Time each way is around 3 hours.

I still have train tickets – my advise would be by ticket one day early) Cairo Central Station is very busy – I don’t think you will have issues buying your ticket.

If your going by air then I think it will be around 30 - 45 mins.

I hope you have a lovely trip to Egypt.

I am in a similar situation: I will be traveling in Egypt next week and am considering visiting Alexandria. Are there particular areas that I should avoid in the city, or should I avoid Alexandria altogether?

It's been easy to find advice (British Foreign Office, US Dept of State, etc) on areas to avoid in Cairo, but I am having trouble finding safety tips for Alexandria.

InannaMouse, if you find out anything further do share it on the board. I would very much appreciate it!

Well, so far, the responses on this forum & on other travel/expat forums all indicate that I shouldn't worry overmuch. The usual alertness & vigilance required for a woman traveling alone, of course. What day do you arrive? Iif you have a chance to visit this thread again, I will post an update from Alexandria & work on my Alexandria page.

Dora is one of my best friends. Alex you are welcome on pure friendly basis.
1) Yes self-guided tours are OK, no specific places should be avoided, except of the military ones for sure.
2) It depends. Budget and luxury hotels are available.
3) Weather is so nice for driving (It goes without saying, you hold an international driving valid licence.
4) Diving in Alexandria needs certain preparations. It concerns archaeological submeged items only; however, in red sea it is quite different and amzing galore. It is arranged in small groups on boats to diving areas of coral reefs etc. or by a submarine to similar areas if you don't dive. There are also glass boats, but not so enjoyable as far as I think. Swimwear is permitted, while the boat-man provides snorkling items.
5) Enjoy every second, please your hubby & share full happiness. Also avoid peak curuosity and interference into irrelevant issues, although all areas that you plan to visit will be secure enough; as parliment elections have already taken place successfully.
Alex! In case you need any further help -on friendly basis- pls don't hestitate to call me.
Dora! Hugs & kisses (~_~)

1. Self-guided tours are ok, to make it easy take a taxi driver for the day

2. I'd stay in one of the hotels on the Corniche, by the sea in the city center, in Union Hotel for instance.

3. Diving in Alexandria is for experienced divers who want to dive on pahraonic / greek ruins, I assume you meant diving on the Red Sea. It will be possible but you'll need a long-legged wetsuit as the water is cold these days

4. In Alexandria women swim entirely dressed, except for the handful of private beaches attended by wealthy Egyptians. In the Red Sea you can wear whatever swimsuit you want on the beach (try to avoid topless, people do not like it) but put on a dress when alking away from the beach
