Fondue vs Raclette
Posted: Tue November 22, 2011 07:02 AM UTC
Hi there:

Two questions:

- Which one would you choose?
- I've read some tips, but, could you suggest a good restaurant (I prefer not too expensive)

Thanks!

That's a tough choice - both are different. But I think I would choose Raclette over Fondue. I like the variety of vegetables and meats.

I've only had these at German friends' homes and not in restaurants so unfortunately I can't help you with that part. But you asked which I would choose - Raclette :-)

I, however, prefer fondue to racelettes. As far as I am informed real Swiss racelettes are pure vegetarian, it's the French ones that have meat in addition. But I may be wrong.

I would eat Fondue at the restaurant never Raclette because you need to have a fondue pot and forks. Raclette I only eat from market stalls at festivals or at home except one time when we ate Raclette at a special raclette restaurant in the Valais/Wallis during a VT meet.

A real raclette involves a big cheese and a open fire (or an electric heater). It's something for bigger groups.
My tip: Go to a Migros, get yourself a pack (or two) of ready made Fondue mix, and take it with you back to your home country.

One of the best meals of my life was at a restaurant in Gruyeres where they offered us both fondue and raclette (usually you have to eat one or the other), topped off with a dessert made with meringue, ice cream and double cream. I thought I had died and gone to heaven :-) Assuming you are talking about cheese fondue, I prefer fondue over raclette, raclette always seems like more of a snack to me.

Are you only eating one meal? I'd do both if you haven't had them before. Fondue is our Fun Friday meal in the winter because the whole family loves it . . . however, if someone else is doing the cooking, raclette is terrific. If you have the time and opportunity, try both.

Don't try it on the same day though. Once in Switzerland we had fondue for lunch in Gruyere and then our hotel served raclette for dinner. There was no way we could finish it; we were stuffed. It is very filling . . . what is called comfort food where I grew up. 8^)

Of course with a good Fendant AOC from my Valais ;-)
Lötschberg restaurant is a good choice.

Thanks a lot, guys!

I'll have one lunch + dinners, so, I'd prefer at lunch time (just one day then), too heavy for dinner I think.

Why choose? Why not eat both? :)

Since the subject of raclette has been brought up......
I fondly remember eating raclette over 30 years ago during a holiday celebration (August 15th) in Zermatt. It was an open-air affair, with traditional local Swiss clothes, folklore and dancing. Raclette was served at stalls on paper plates and included: Melted hard cheese, small boiled potatoes and pickles - all simply served on one plate. Is this the classic Swiss raclette?

Yes, different from French raclettes, where also some meat goes with it.
