2 questions...
- I've emailed the Jupiter International Cazanchise looking for a booking, but no reply after 3 weeks; any thoughts or suggestions? Do I have to phone?
- Any suggestions for a reliable company to go to for excursions outside the city and tours of the city itself?

Iain,

I don’t know your hotel, but I remember when I was planning to go to Addis, I had big problems for booking a medium range hotel with internet. I took the only one which replied by email: EXTREME HOTEL ( http://www.extremehoteladdis.com/ )
Gaston Guez (Churchill Road), Addis Abeba
P.O.Box 6948
Tel. +251-11-1553777, Fax. +251-11-1551077
eMail: extremehoteladdis@yahoo.com

It was less than 20 Euros, clean and comfortable, but no luxury at all; they arrange pick-up at the airport.
I was in Addis in summer 2010; I did not take organised tours, I used taxis (very cheap, but had to discuss about the fare every time) to go to the places I wanted to visit (Museum of Anthropology, Cathedral, Holy Trinity, etc. . . ) or I walked, the street life is very interesting.
Ah! there is another hotel where I stayed, when returning from countryside, they have no website, but it is a very nice one: Lido Hotel, on Sudan street, with a nice backyard and a quite good breakfast (15 Euros).

Can thoroughly recommend Pamela Robbie (ex NZ) who operates tours in and around Addis and everywhere in Ethiopia under name of Gobaz Tours (email gobaz@gmail.com)
Can virtually cater for all interests and lengths of stay

Send VT'er DAO a note as he should have some additional connections there. There are guides in every tourist city there so no real need to arrange a tour. As others have said - taxis are cheap if you bargain a bit with them. Mercato is one place you might want to team up with a local to keep the riff raff away from you.

Safe travels

I think you won´t need a tour in Addis itself - it is easy to organise things for yourself and go by taxi or minibus. The hotel situation has certainly improved over the past years and an incresing number of hotels offers free internet.

If a tour company has not replied to your email after three weeks they might either be lazy in checking their account or out of business - I would try to look for someone else. I cannot recommend tour companies though as I have always been around either on my own or with friends, so don´t know which company offers best rates and service

I never stayed there, but if you want to stay there for their location in Casanchez, my suggestion is:
Write them another email. If they had problems with internet access for a few days and too many mails have arrived your mail might have been overlooked. Always ask explicitly for a return mail to confirm your booking. Maybe your room is booked but as there were no problems, they did not see any need to correspond (should not happen at a 4-star hotel but is quite common in Ethiopian culture).
Good luck.
