Is 4 nights in Paris enough?
Posted: Sat October 29, 2011 10:55 AM UTC
I plan on booking a short break away to Paris in February when I return from work tonight. My plan is to go from London on the Eurostar on an early train on Sunday 12th February, and then return on a late train on Thursday 16th.

I am planning on visiting most of the attractions, as well as doing a couple of photoshoots (both landscape and portrait) for college work whilst I'm there. I will be travelling alone, and feel that 4 days would give me a relaxed break with time to fit everything in whilst being able to appreciate Paris.

Does this sound about right or would you recommend an extra day/deduce a day?

If it helps I will post up my itinerary of the days when I return home tonight... Thanks

To relax I would take an extra day if possible., and why not if you can. With everyones busy schedule now a day, you might not be able to return to Paris. Take that extra day and do nothing if you wish.

4 nights is nice. Next June I'll spend 5 nights, just that little bit extra. It's a beautiful city and lots to see. Have a look at ( aside from the cultural places) Rue Moffetard, not too far from the Panthenon. A street of food, cafes, delis, restaurants, really, really good. The also have a great "brocante market" antiques, bric a brac around June. If I could buy a container of stuff and bring it back I'd do it.

LOL - a YEAR isn't enough time in Paris! Seriously, if you can add an extra day, I'd do it. Serious shutterbugs like yourself will find plenty and more in that city to keep them very, very busy.

Do get out to Père Lachaise or one of the other bigger cemeteries: GREAT places to squeeze off interesting snaps.

Hi - there is so much to see and do in Paris - and for photography, it's great. If you can take the extra day, I'd recommend doing so! Enjoy Paris!

As an avid photographer, all I can say more is better so far as Paris is concerned. I've been there a couple of times, near the beginning of March and frankly on some days was not our friend, photographically, so getting an extra day in will bump up your chances of better light.

If you check out my Paris pages, you will see what I mean about the lighting conditions, which I expect will be similar if you go mid-Feb.

I'd say that the weather and day length at that time of year are likely to have a fairly big impact on your time. If your plan is to take night shots then obviously the short day length is in your favour. Otherwise even on a sunny day you may have as few as 6 hours of good light. Again, if you're after sunset/sunrise shots then you just have to hope for sunshine at right time of day.

I can't imagine you'd be bored(!) if you have the extra day and at least these days taking 1000 photos costs you nothing.

Mattie,

For your portraits I take it you mean "off the street photography". Be aware that French law allows you to take photos of anybody that is in a public place (except police, army etc)but it is still usual to ask except of course if they are in a general photo.

There is so much to see in Paris - if you can go the extra day, do it for sure. You'll have shorter daylight hours and if you want to see the majority of attractions, you'll need to plan your itinerary out to cover them all. As a photographer myself, I know that the best laid plans can go awry - so don't make the itinerary so full that you have no time for spontaneous photography; you just never know what you'll come across!

Also, if the attractions you hope to see include museums, they can eat a lot of time. I recommend if you go to them, again, have a plan and know what your *must see* pieces are - hit all of them first, check your time and if you can afford more time, take the relaxed tour.

Get any tickets in advance that you can to save time in lines (although February shouldn't be too bad). Just in case though...

Paris is fabulous! I think I eat more baguettes there than anything else!

Have a great trip!

Hi again,

FYI, Brenda is probably right about February but note that the school half-term holiday starts in France for the first zone on the 11th Feb, although that doesn't include the Paris rectorate, so there may be more kids around than usual at the major sites.

Neither 4 days nor 5 days will be enough ! Then, relax, enjoy, visit what you can and plan to come back. Advices of others are useful but you are the only one that knows what YOU are excited about. Your 4 (or 5) days will give you a sample and next time, you will know exactly what you have missed and want absolutely to visit or what you want to visit a second time, differently.

So long as you don't spend all your time in queues, then I think I get what you mean - and would say yes - just about enough.
You won't get the full feel of anywhere if you hop-about the main sights but you will have a fantastic time.
DO get the view of the Eiffel Tower from the balcony at Trocadero - THAT is the best photo opportunity ever!

If you have only four nights so be it, but Paris takes a lifetime and more ::)

The period folks go out is Valentine's Day on the 14 February so check the places you want to go if reservations are require or for easy admission.

Other than that you will have a great time in Paris. Cheers

I agree with goodfish and gwened. Paris is more than a series of photo ops., although it does present a miriad of those. February may not be the season during which she presents her most photogenic face.

Start with a good map and plan your days. If you plan well, you can cover a lot in just a few days. We try to take the Metro out to the farthest point of the day and then work our way back to the hotel as we sightsee. I use "Paris Pratique par Arrondissement" that you can buy in any news stand, bookstore and many tabacs in Paris (or on Amazon.com). You can also use Google Maps if you want to plan before you go. http://maps.google.com/

Be flexible with your daily plans. For example, once we had planned to visit Versailles on a Thursday but woke up Tuesday to a bright, sunny November day with rain predicted Thursday. We traded days and went to Versailles on the sunny Tuesday and spent rainy Thursday in the Louvre.

You will have short days in February so take a tripod for evening outdoor shots. Most places don't allow tripods inside. In churches I usually set my camera on the back of a pew or a chair to steady it.

You'll have a great time. BTW, if you can schedule that extra day, do it. You will be very happy that you did.

Thank-you very much everyone! I am home now and going to look into booking the extra day!

Great advice that I didn't think about regarding the short daylight hours.

and the Line 1 of Paris metro has begun today to operate in automatic status like the line 14;so more trains will be put in service this way along 2012.
I will be in Paris by Porte Maillot coming on TGV by Montparnasse, and have meeting posted for lunch with anyone there now.
