Few Quick Question for Spontaneous trip
Posted: Sat October 1, 2011 10:17 AM UTC
I'm looking for a small hotel in St.Germain, Paris nothing expensive up to 100Euro per night. Something small nice clean and romantic.

2. Whats the easy way to arrive the above area from Charles de Gaulle Airport ? I believe trip via taxi will be relatively expensive, any other easy way ?

3. Nice small restaurants around ? Any special Cafe that you liked ?

4. Photographers, Im going to be spending a lot of time with my Camera, taking lenses for portraits and landscapes... if you have any tips how be best to "catch Paris" in my lens i'll be happy to hear.

Thanks / Merci :)
Sharon.

Take at least a wide angle lens for the buildings in the narrower streets.

Great off-look possibilities: Sacre Coeur, Tour Montpernasse, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomph, Trocadore, metroline 6.

I leave it up to you to bring a zoom lens.

I took this from the Arc de Triomph: http://cache.virtualtourist.com/6/5857835.jpg

I took the Roissybus from DGB Airport: 10 Euro's and you arrive at l'Opera (in 1 hour).
Friends of me traveled with the RER train and you can travel to a number of different Paris train stations (for example Luxumbourg; there are smaller hotels in the neighbourhood at Qatier Latin).

Sharon, when are you going to be in Paris. I have planned a VT mini meet on October 17th from 5-7 for happy hour and would love to have you come if you are here.

The RER B train is an easy and reliable way to get from CDG, depending on where your hotel is, you may still have to connect to the metro

This website lists some other options, the RER is the only way I've done it

If you don't get a recommendation for a hotel, try looking on booking.com which is broken down by area, I've used them to book a lot of hotels, the reviews are all written by people who actually have stayed at the property (I usually double check on Trip Advisor once I've selected a hotel). Sign up for their flash deals, there were some really great rates for a couple of the hotels I used on my last trip, just not when we were there.

My favorite spot for taking photos is from the top of Notre Dame on the level where the gargoyles (chimera) are. You have to climb up a few steps to get there but I think it's the best view in Paris. If you go, the queue starts lining up well before 10am when it opens, we got there at 9:40am and only had to wait until 10:10 to go up, the trip previous I got there at 10:10 and waited until 11:30

If you like chocolate, Angelina's is a don't miss spot, their hot chocolate and pastries are out of this world.

We always enjoy the Hotel de la Place de la Vosges but its in the 4eme by Place des Vosges rather than St. Germain. http://hotelplacedesvosges.com/eng/index.php
Double or single, bath shower, large bed from 90 euros

We haven't stayed at Hotel des Arts but it's been recommended here on VT and is in St. Germain.
Hotel St. Andre des Arts, St. Germain district (Metro Odeon)
http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/h75006saintandredesarts.htm
Double room - start at 95 euros WITH BREAKFAST

Here's our favorite restaurant which coincidentally is in the St. Germain district. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1e8d46/

Great people photos at any of the Paris gardens. Our favorite is the Tuileries. We also find early morning is great for light and lack of people if you want pictures of buildings/monuments without distraction. Personally, I love people pictures.

My info is 4 years old and may have changed. There is the AirFrance bus that goes to the Montparrase tower/station and from there its only short ride by taxi or get on the metro and walk from the closest station to which ever hotel you book into. Nothing is further than 500 metres from a metro/RER station in Paris - or so we were told. We stayed close to that Montparrase tower/station but on a previous trip to Paris on the Boulevard St Germain and across the road from that metro station.

Sharon, a wonderful little hotel I always stay in is in St. Germain and just a block or so from both the train from CDG and also from the Metro. It's next to the Odéon Theatre.. very atmospheric! Google Le Michelet Odéon. Ask for a room in front, as the back rooms can get noisy at night. It's not very fancy, but it's very neat and clean and friendly.

I had a good meal nearby at a restaurant called La Ferrandise. The Luxemberg Gardens are just a block away from that and the hotel.

many good hotels, VT has on Paris destination a bunch to choose from with comments. Same can be said of restos, cafes. My favorites are all in the pl St Michel.
Paris is good on any camera ::) sorry not well informed on cameras mine is aim and shoot lol!

the trip from airport easy way is shuttle van, RER B cheaper but crowded. until 2015 where there is plan to have a metro from CDG to Opera part of the Grand Paris Project
Cheers

I like your photographs, you seems to be able to capture the moment in time. I try to do the same when I travel or here in Paris where I live. The City of Lights has endless opportunities for fantastic photos and with your "photographers eye" you won't have any problems capturing everything interesting, from people to monuments, and from sunrises to sunsets.
Try early morning or late afternoon shots along the river, climb the Notre Dame, Gallerie Lafayette department store, Musee du monde Arabe and Arc de Triomphe and capture the City from above, or escape the tourist areas and visit some less known streets around Montmartre, Passy and Butte de Calles.
Rest in one of the caffes, observe people and take shots (my favorite).
I have probably taken more than 10000 photos of Paris and I always find many new opportunities.
Most of all, enjoy your stay and observe it also with your eye (not just your camera).
Hope you'll have a great time.
Regards
Svetlana
