Hi,
I've started my preparations for trip to the southern part of the USA (visit summer 2012). I want to visit the music cities in the South (Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans.
I have a question concerning driving from Memphis towards Nachez (via Tupelo ?)
which is the most beautiful scenic route ; down along the Mississipi river, or via the Nachez Trace Parkway ?
In my opinion the Nachez Trace Parkway is the better of the 2 routes. I've only done the trip between Memphis and Tupelo once about 4 years ago, but do remember it being scenic with plenty of trees and rivers. Came back to Memphis via Oxford, Mississippi. I would recommend stopping there for a short visit. They have a very nice town square with some really nice bookstores.
After my response I looked at what VT members had to say about Oxford and there is nary a page. I'll have to dig out my pictures from my old computer and site a tip or two. Do stop by the city, I think you will enjoy it. Very nice college campus town also as it is the home of The University of Mississippi.
Are you starting in Memphis and then picking up the Parkway from near Nashville? That would be the route I would prefer, dropping down through Tupelo. If you go straight down from Memphis Hwy 61 is pretty boring down through the delta, but it is the birthplace of the blues. Maybe run the Natchez down to Jackson, pick up I-20 over to Vicksburg and take 61 down to Natchez, it's a good highway and there is a lot of history along the way. Happy trails!
