That would depend on how much time you have on the island. If you're coming via cruise boat and have never been before, either check out the places you'd like to visit in advance and figure the distances weighing the rental cost vs a tour cost (probably rental is still cheaper).

I've done both and found more freedom with getting around by having the car, but then I wanted to drive the island, not just wander the port areas.

You don't indicate where you are from, but you need to know they drive on the left side of the road, roads are narrow, standard shifts are much more common than automatics, and signage tends to be nonexistent in lots of areas.
Having said that, I would agree with the above post. We were there for 5 days and really wanted to get out and see the whole island, so a car was very useful.
There really isn't much to see in Bridgetown, IMO.

Not enough information. Depends on how you get there, what your interests are, and what you hope to achieve, and how long you intend to stay there.

Personally, I usually just head for the Gap, and stay there, but it is not for everyone. The St Lawrence Gap is an area just a few miles south of Bridgetown, and is a quaint center of activities. Mostly good ones....d:o)

Take a look...

They drive on the left so you'll have to ajust if your from North America. Great way to see the island but carry a map as signage is bad out in the countryside.Potholes on secondary roads and most roads are narrow.Don't be afraid to be agressive cause they are and honking is a must.Stay out of Bridgetown with the car as it gets bad at times and traffic jams are common along the south coast near the Gap on Fridays and weekends.Make sure you have plenty of insurance.

My vote would be. . . No. Barbados has an extensive bus system that will take ou anywhere on the island and there are an abundance of cabs. Unless there is somewhere you specifically want to go, I beleive part of the joy of Barbados is being able to get on the bus/van and just travel as the locals do. However, it is up to you. I have been there 6 times and have never rented a car. I enjoy the freedom of not having to deal with left-hand driving and finding a parking spot. Car rental in Barbados is also pretty expensive.
