Harbin Ice Festival

Morning.. Singapore calling Harbin!

I am planning to be in China over Christmas and New Years, ie before the Ice Festival begins. Just wondering if it's possible to visit the ice sculptures before the official opening date.

The second question is where to go skiing in China? I have never skied before heheh... if it can be near Harbin that would be great!

Thanks and hear from you!

I believe the official opening date is January 5th? Whatever date, we were there in 2005 maybe two days before the official opening date and it was still awesome. There were a few artists doing finishing touches here and there, but for the most part it all done and open to the public (paying public).

I highly recommend first visiting the sculptures during the daytime. They will be amazing. Then come back again at night to see them when they are 100 times more amazing.

Hi, I was there in late December (Christmas season) and the park is open to public but not officially opened.

As for skiing, there are a number of places in Harbin vicinity. I went to Yabuli.

You can read about it in my travelblog on this website.

hye..i have tried to post my own title, but error..emm..ok anyway,i have questions:

1) full day tour in harbin, need to use travel agency or just go by my own is better?
2) any cheap domestic airlines from tianjin - harbin? below usd100 if possible?
3) entrance fees to all tour places still the same?
4) is it possible to get train to harbin from beijing on the spot? might be reach beijing station about 6pm, then try to get 9pm overnight train.
5) night train got seat instead of sleeper? due to some website did mention hard/soft seat. i also do not know which website is correct information.

i have 2 option here:
1) if flight is cheap i'll be overnight in harbin and have tour with my own.
2) otherwise i'll take night train, reach harbin early morning then go for the tour (travel agency) then take a night train back to beijing.

thanks in advance on all respond.

cheers,

catlip,

1) We just took local taxis (much cheaper than those in Singapore) to the sites in Harbin: the snow sculptures, the Ice Festival, and the tiger park. The only other sites we saw was the Church of St. Sophia (Russian architecture in China) and the market which we walked to.

4) and 5) www.seat61.com is a good resource for all train questions. Our train from Harbin to Beijing was pre-booked. I'm not sure what class it was, but there were sleeping bunks three high, in groups of six.
