Well, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with either one. However, given the time consumed in driving, I would opt for Ljubljana. It is a truly beautiful little city. It offers a greater variety of things and gives you a little more time. The main square in Ljubljana is one where I could happily sit for several hours with a nice drink and snack.

We have visited both destinations in 2005. We had 2 nights stay in Lake Bled but only a half day in Ljubliana.
For me Ljubliana offered more, a lovely small city with character. Photos on my pages should you be interested.

Hi
Agree that either is good, but would probably plump for Ljubljana because of the shorter drive and the fact that it isn't such a weather-dependent location (when are you travelling, by the way?).
Does the cruise not offer a trip to the Postojna Caves as well? Now that is something REALLY worth doing, and would be m,y choice if all three trips were available.
Regards
Cathy

Hi Nadia
Does the Bled tour include a visit to the Vintgar Gorge just outside town. It's exquisite and to my mind, it's almost more beautiful than the lake (and that's saying something!). Have a look on my Bled page if you're interested in taking a peek.
Greetings from Jo'burg to Jo'burg!

I agree that either place is well worth visiting.
Cost being irrelevant, I'd choose Ljubljana. It is so tiny that your 90 minutes free time will be ample to see what you did not see on your walking & boat tours.
An hour on Bled lake might be lovely (although I'd personally find it too much) but not if the weather isn't good. 2 hours free time will really only allow you time to visit the castle (it's a steep haul and some way outside Bled centre) and/or wander round the lakeside.

The subject has been well covered ...we were in both places this year...My advice is to pick one and eat your heart out for the other...you will just have to get back and see more of this beautiful country.

IMO bled. ljubljana really isnt anything special. theres really not much to see there.
if you would think about renting a car (it would be really easy to drive in slovenia), you could take the route skofja loka (its a old mediavel town, rather small, so the old town can be seen in an hour), bled and bohinj.
ljubljana if youd take the tour, but id choose it grudgingly.

I would pick Ljubljana. It is extremely cute and 7 hours there would mean that you'd pretty much cover every street in town! (It's small.) Lake Bled is nice, but I didn't find it to be particularly stunning--you can do better elsewhere as far as mountain lake scenery, in my opinion.
I would also not want to drive 2 hours there and back to get to Lake Bled. That eats up way too much of your day.

Lake Bled.... I assume you will be taken by bus. It is beautiful there, there is a castle up high and boats can take you out to the island where there is a chapel. Multi photo opportunities. I have been there twice, both to paint watercolors and enjoy the lake. they have scheduled you enough time for things.
Llubliana....Very nice city, where you can walk around and see the super market, both indoors and out, the canal, and there is a tram to take you up to the castle overlooking the city. their schedule will make you hurry a bit to walk around, you will probably end up sitting along the canal at a table having something nice to drink. both choices are nice...
Food in both places is super.
Prices, not bad.
I have some pages you can see more there. Take a look at them if you have time.

dont take the tour cave unless they include predjama castle or something else. the caves itself take an hour to visit and after that, theres nothing really in postojna.

I agree that Postojna caves + Predjama castle is much worth a visit that either Bled lake (nice place for sure but that's all) or Ljubljana (pleasant city for sure). If I have to chose between these three locations I would chose the former but all three are fine.

if the poster would rent a car, he could easily do postojna-ljubljana.
postojna is basically on the way back from ljubljana to koper.

Yes but parking in Ljubljana is tricky! Same in Bled BTW!
In Ljubljana, we ended in a subterranean parking, 20 minute walk out of the city center. In Bled we were lucky to find a car that left a free carpark close to the city center right in front of our car. I realised later that there were very few free parking lots and nevertheless that even among pay car park, the turnover was very very low!

Agreed.
Also the OP is a South African, and doesn't provide much information on her previous travels. Maybe she's a very experienced traveller (in which case I am underestimating her and apologise!), but given that she may never have been in Slovenia before - and the fact that we drive on the opposite side of the road - I could understand any reluctance to hire a car for a day in a strange country.

Re: One day only in slovenia Posted: Thu September 1, 2011 08:52 AM UTC
One more thought on driving.
There is a section of the freeway between the Bled turn off and Ljubliana, that for two years has been a nightmare sometimes. Traffic stops... and crawls. I don't know if it has been fixed but with the economy the way it is, i think not. It is a construction zone making more lanes.
Nothing would be more stressful than being stuck in the traffic in a rental car you have to turn in and the time to get back to the boat becoming shorter and short. Not fun.
I agree on skipping the caves.

dave, there was absolutely no stress or being stuck..weve been there just recently in may-june (we go often, me being half slovenian, to visit family).
it was quite easy driving around.
but without a car, one really cant see that much.

and last..if not a car, there is of course the possibility of taking the bus to some destination of interest.
but again, if one wants the cruise tour, im maintaining that unless predjama castle is included, postojna caves should be skipped. its nothing that special and doesnt take such a long time.
then better ljubljana or bled.

It is sad that you have only one day for Slovenia. That beautiful, modern, sophisticated country offers things more than one day. I have been to Bled, Bohinj, Ljubljana and Maribor. My recommendation will be for lake Bled. You will have the chance to recharge your body batteries :-) Enjoy your trip...
