From Lesce-Bled station to Bled
Posted: Thu August 25, 2011 03:32 AM UTC
Hi
I shall be arriving at Lesce-Bled station from Klagenfurt by train.
Can anyone help me to get to Pr' Matjon, where I will be staying for the next 4 night by bus from Lesce-Bled station? This pension is in the village of Selo.
Also I am wondering if i should spend all 4 days exploring region near Bled or should i take a train/bus to Ljubjana or to Maribor. which one is prettier?
Any idea what buses? or trains and how much?
It will have to be day trips. is it worth seeing these 2 cities or shall i visit them on another trip to europe and spend all my time in bled?
was just wondering because if the weather is rainy, it would be pointless to be in Bled and so i might as well go visit the other 2 cities should it rain. Please help

Ljubjana is definatly worth to go there, train iis about 45 minutes from Lesce Bled and about € 5, Maribor is interresting as well but would be about 3.15 hours by train .
From Lesce Bled train station there are frequent buses to Bled, 20 minutes, € 1,30, usualy there are taxi waiting at Bled bus station (about 1,5 km from there, or 5 km from Lesce Bled train station).

Yes, definitely do take a day to explore Ljubliana. It's easy to get to and a lovely little jewel of a capital city.

If you are happy with a longer trip then Maribor is also a lovely place to explore..or Ptuj, with its Roman remains.

A quicker trip from Ljubliana are the magnificent Postonja or Skocjan cave systems, by train. Either is well worth a visit:

Both sites are in English.

You can find train times and info in English on

and bus info on

Hi
I would definitely second Ljubljana, which will easily keep you busy for a day. I think that Maribor - though a nice place - is probably not worth the effort given the travel time and the fact that you only have a short time to play with in the first place.
When you're in Bled, be sure not to overlook the stunning Vintgar Gorge which is only a couple of kilometres out of town and accessible by bus or on foot - arguably even more beautiful than the lake (and that's saying a lot).
Bohinj is lovely - many people prefer Bohinj's quieter charms to Bled's more developed atmosphere - but its attraction is the stunning scenery, and this isn't a worthwhile option in bad weather.
If you have extra time on your hands (or the weather turns bad), then consider more local towns such as Skofja Loka or Radovljica which should be easily accessible from Bled by public transport. In particular, Radovljica has an enchanting bee keeping museum, which showcases the local folk art form of painting panels on the front of beehives. Not only is it quirkily cultural, but it would also be an excellent wet weather option.
Places further south - such as Postojna - are great, but remember that you'll have to factor in the time to first travel into Ljubljana and then onto the destination, which could be time consuming if you're using public transport. In that respect, Bled is not the ideal place to be based, so I would rather suggest that you focus on what that part of the country has to offer rather than trying to hare around the whole of Slovenia. You'll find heaps to keep you occupied -even if the weather isn't good - and chances are that once you've had a taste of glorious Slovenia, you'll want to return!
More on my travel pages if you're interested.
Regards
Cathy

4 days is too much for bled. one day is enough. its beautiful, but overpriced and nowdays a bit on the kitchy touristy side (too many casino buildings around it etc ruined for me at least the site quite a lot).

if in your place, id base myself in skofja loka and explore bled from there.
and id combine visiting bled with also visiting bohinj.

so yes, you should definitely go for day trips.

also the lesce train station is around one km or more from bled lake. best see with your pension if they can organise a pickup.

Definitely visit Bohinj, too if you like scenery and water sport or hiking. One day you can just take a circular trail around the lake, but you can do it as fast as in 3 hours. Have a trip to Savica waterfall, there are many steps to climb but worth it. If you get too tired in one day, take a hike along Mostnice gorge, stunning area near Bohinj lake, you can start walking in Stara Fuzina. Cable car above the lake to get some stunning views is also possible. I guess you shall see where you like it most adapt your speed of travel accordingly.
Radovljica and Skofja loka are both worth a stop, but are small towns. Kranj is also fine, it's larger.
If time allows (and weather) you can also have a trip to Soca valley - by train or by car via Vrsic which is further.

Then Ljubljana in the end, I guess if you focus on North West Slovenia you won't have time to stop in Maribor, but the place is worth a visit, especially their famous wine routes. Hard decision between two cities, but if you go along the mainstream then I guess no doubt Ljubljana is the choice as it has more to offer in cultural and architectural sense.
