"Slovenian" Visa or "Slovenian" Master?
Posted: Fri August 19, 2011 03:46 PM UTC
A dilemma my kid is facing. For instance in the past we found that while in Belgrade it is a rather neutral question - in rural Serbia "Visa" checking card is more widely accepted by ATM-s than "Master".

What is the situation in Slovenia? Should he get a "visa" for duration of his studies or a "master"?

(Obviously this is not passport-related question, we don't need any visa to Slovenia, even long-term)

George Altho Slovenia doesnt want to be bumpt up with Balkans, well it is... So out there VISA is widely used , more than MAESTRO.
Another tip, when he get there, get him ONE mobile telecome SIM. Is way cheaper than competitors...

Actually, Mastercard is much more common in Slovenia though most of the places also accept Visa.

As Mirca said - Mastercard is more common, most local banks are on that system, but you can use both, almost all cash machines are linked to several major banking systems.

I forgot to add - get the chip-card type. If you're going to open a non-resident bank acount in Slovenia, you'll get one anyway. Compare the costs of transactions and investigate about possible advantages of opening such account with the bank which is affiliate to your own bank, because money-transfer time from you to your son might be much shorter and costs lesser. SKB (part of Societe Generale) in my opinion has the best e-bank system in Slovenia, with incependent code-generator, very safe, enables transactions from different locations.

Thanks - we are in the meantime in the process to sort all this out. The problem is, the money for the Erasmus will be given in Hungary and they want that he has a bank account (in Hungary??? - not sure).

In general, the banking conditions in HU are one of the worst - if not the worst - in the region, after U.S. I looked at the banks here and decided to avoid any bank in HU because of ridiculous fees.

The Unicredit looked at least OK - they have no feast from own ATM-s anywhere - but I am very reluctant to suggest any kind of bank for my kid in HU (see above). The Visa-MAster dilemma is something extra.

"the money for the Erasmus will be given in Hungary and they want that he has a bank account " that's understandable, your son should check with his Erasmus office to get precise instructions. It might be important to learn if his scholarship is paid in Euros or Forint, and if he can ask for payment to an account in the country of his university location. Unicredit is also in Slovenia, and if Hungary is part of SEPA network (which I think it is but not sure) then international transaction times and fees should be reasonable.

When being in Slovenia in 2008 I used my VISA card quite often, and it was not accepted only once in some cafe in BTC City - a trade center in Ljubljana. They needed MASTER, so I just paid cash.
