Crpssing into Burma from Thailand
Posted: Tue February 3, 2004 08:54 AM UTC
Greetings. I am currently in Bangkok and plan to travel to the north of Thailand, and was hoping to cross into Burma for a ten day tour. Can anyone let me know if that is possible?

Thanks,

Claire

Hi Claire
Last year this certainly wasn't possible. you cold cross over into Burma from Northern Thailand at Mai Sai BUT only for the day - Great if you want to extend your Thai visa but not much good for anything else -- However there are flights from Chaing Mai to both Yangon and Mandalay, so if you wish to combine a Northern Thailand / Burma trip then at least you don't have to return all the way to Bangkok

Hey Claire,

You are in luck, I just did this two weeks ago. You can cross from Mae Sai, Thailand to Takchilek, Burma. They will issue you a 14 day visa at the border. Bring $10 USD and three pictures, (No requirement to buy and FEC for the border visa) it will probably take about a half an hour at the border.

Once across, you can go as far as the following cities: Takchilek-Kengtung-Mongla and area around them. (You cant go to Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, etc, so if you want to visit any of these you will likely have to fly to Yangon from Bangkok, though...) But if you are just looking for trekking in the Shan State, then no problem, you can stay for two weeks....

Hope this helps...

Thanks so much. I knew there must have been some way! Though not being able to make it to Mandalay gives me pause. Thanks again.

Hi there!
I went to some friends who are working in travel & tours and asked them. As the answer you can go pass and get the visa to Myanmar by having visa at the border gate (mai sai). have a nice thim.
best wishes

ALL - As an update, just wanted to let you know that I did the Thailand/Myanmar (Burma) crossing twice with no incident - once in the North into Thailand (Mae Sot/Tachileik) and once in the South into Myanmar(Ranong/Kawthaung sp?). From the latter, you must either fly to Yangon, or take the hydrofoil north which stops in Meik (also has an airport). Email me if you have queries. Best to have a visa ahead of time for overland. Visas on last check arriving by plane can be done on arrival. Cheers, C
