trolley and hotel circle
Posted: Wed August 3, 2011 03:42 PM UTC
When I used to live in SD, highway access from hotel circle was a little tricky since you might have to cross over the freeway first in order to find an on-ramp. For this trip, I'm planning to take the trolley rather than rent a car. Are there trolley stations on both sides of the freeway, or should I limit my hotel search to just north or south of I8?

Hi there,

You are talking about the Green Line (SD Trolley) and the tracks meander on both sides of I-8 depending on where you are. If you are staying near near the Hotel Circle area, the tracks/stations are north of I-8. Further east, it goes under I-8 to link up with SDSU (south side). And even further east, it crosses back to the north side to head out to Santee. Take a look at the link for more details: http://www.sdcommute.com/RegionalMaps/RTM_March2011.pdf

Hope this helps.

Barry

The trolley is on the north side of I-8 through Mission Valley, but most of it is also across the San Diego River, which has only a few bridges. Most of the hotels on Hotel Circle are on the south side of I-8 also.

If you want to stay in San Diego and get by on public transit, you'd probably be better off in the Gaslamp, Downtown, or Old Town.

Thanks so much for the advice. I went to school in SDSU and graduated in 1991. The trolley wasn't so extensive then, plus I never spent any time in the gaslamp. Based on what I've been reading, it looks like that is really the place to be. We live in Wisconsin and want just a long weekend getaway to see the old stomping grounds again. I'm guessing there have been lots of changes in 20 years!

Trolley stops along or near the I-8 are located north of the Freeway and there are motel/hotels in the area. See the Green Line stops for Mission Valley, as well as the Blue Line and Orange Line at: http://wikitravel.org/upload/shared//c/cb/Missionvalley_sandiego_map.PNG

There is also information on the timestables for these Trolley lines at:
http://transit.511sd.com/PDFs/TrolleyTimetables.pdf

I prefer the Old Town area for a hotel. The Holiday Inn Express in Old Town also has complimentary local shuttle service up to 5 miles. That might be something to consider. Their website:

Costing a little more for a day pass is the Old Town Trolley which has a tour style trolley system. See their website:
