| T'bilisi | Georgia: Getting There Posted: Mon February 2, 2004 02:48 PM UTC
HI everyone! I'm planning a trip to Georgia this summer/autumn, coming from Moscow. Has anyone taken a train Moscow-Vladikavkaz, and then bus to Tbilisi: how long does the train take and how expensive is the ticket? And how regular is the bus service Vladikavkaz-Tbilisi?
Thanks for your help! =) |

I didn't take the mentioned train but I travelled once Kyiv-Tbilisi by train and it was 3 days. Kyiv-Moscow is an overnight train and a half-day, so you can guess more or less how much tie it'll take you.
If you can, better take a plane, less headache and faster. Enjoy Georgia, it's a fantastic country

I do not know how to get to Vladikavkaz, but there is a definitely marshutka (mini-van service) from Kazbegi (the small town after you cross Russian-Georgian broder) to Tbilisi. So if there is no bus there you can come to Kazbegi and there should be some daily trips to Tbilisi.
But I've also seen a number of buses that go from Vladikavkaz to Tbilisi though I am not sure what type of conditions are there. wish you gud lak

If I were you, I would fly. The border between Russia and Georgia is extremely problematic. We couldnīt take a trip up to Kazbegi from Tībilisi because Russia closed the border and everyone trying to cross got stranded. Every Georgian who I told I was going to Kazbegi said it was unsafe and a bad idea. And there are a lot of cheap flights. Check with AirBaltic (www.airbaltic.com), a Latvian airline with discount fares via Riga. Itīs worth a lot. Best regards,
Angel
