Lalibela & Addis Ababa
Posted: Thu July 14, 2011 06:14 AM UTC
I'll have 4 days in Ethiopia in January - arriving & departing by air via Addis.

I'm thinking 1.5 days is enough for Addis, and I'm pondering an internal flight to Lalibela. That would give me 1.5 days there.

Is that enough time in Lalibela?

Flight will cost £225/€250 return. Is it "good value" to spend that much money to visit Lalibela?

Am I setting aside enough time for Addis? I think all 4 days would be too much...

I certainly want to see more of the country than just the capital, but I know I could get day excursions from Addis.

When in January will you go? If it is around Timkat (Epiphany, around Jan 17 in Ethiopia), definately go to Lalibela, but book flight and accomodation soon!
All the other times I also think it is worth going to Lalibela even for 1.5 days. And 1.5 days at Addis are also okay.
At the end it depends on what is worth how much to you, there are also options to go South overnight and use public buses for transportation (if money is a concern); if you are interested, drop me a line, I do not want to make things even more complicated now.

And you arrive just AFTER Genna (= ethopian Christmas), what a shame. But that relieves you of the hassle getting accomodation in Lalibela and you can see the sights in peace - if you choose to go there.
Have fun, it is a nice country.
If you need further assistance, let me know, I am in Addis at least twice again this year for work.

I spent ten days in Addis Ababa recently. The Crown Hotel dinner and dancing was fantastic. I liked the National Museum which houses "Lucy" when she is not traveling around the world. And if you can figure out a way to meet some Ethiopian college students, the conversations are interesting. Walking around Addis Ababa University would probably do the trick. The Ethiopian people are more interesting than any sights to me. So I wouldn't spend a lot of time in transit....but that's just me.
