We literally just popped into restaurants that were on just about any street we wandered when we were there last year. I can honestly say we did not have a bad meal anywhere. The nice thing about the French in general, and the Parisians in particular is that they are very much into good food.

We had a fantastic meal in a Moroccan restaurant at the top (Pantheon end) of Rue Muffetard.
This street is worth a look anyway for the quirky fashions, cheese and wine stores etc but the restaurants all looked like fun places to eat.
The Moroccan restaurant (can't recall the name) did "normal" French cuisine as you hint above, but also French North African dishes in those tagine-style serving pots.

Our all-time favorite restaurant is in Paris, La Bastide d'Opio at 9 rue Guisarde in St. Germain. It's a Provencal restaurant, casual, friendly and very good food at reasonable prices. http://www.bistrot-opio.com/
We have had mediocre to bad meals in Paris but lately it seems to have improved. I can't remember a bad meal in the last few visits. Have a great time.

Re: Leaving for Paris in a week, need help with restaurants Posted: Wed June 29, 2011 04:02 PM UTC
One thing I learned while in Paris is that it also depends on what it is you order. I've ordered meals that fell far short of good while my friends ordered meals that were delicious at the same place and the same time.
I too liked Angelinas very much. Two other restaurants, near the center of Paris, that I really enjoyed were:
Le Bomarais (order the Raclettes)
7, rue Sainte Croix De la Bretonnerie
Four or five blocks from the Seine, off rue de Lobau.
Restaurat le Grappion
32 rue Tiquetonne 75002 Paris
It was quite some time ago that I went to either of these places, but worth the suggestion if they are still in business.

Just returned from Paris last week. I love Angelina's too. My daughter is hooked.
There is a really cool place, Farnesina, on Rue Boissy, between La Crillon and the American Embassy, directly across from the Buddha Bar. Because of the Embassy, the road is restricted to pedestrian traffic just beyond the restaurant.
Farnesina

It may be a little extravagant, but on the patio of the Ritz, nothing beats the smoked salmon on toast points with a glass of white. Perfect!
For one of the finest evening views in Paris is Chez Francis. You can dine or just grab a cocktail with great views of the Eiffel lit up at night. It is at the end of the Avenue Montaigne. Food is quite good too, and reasonable for Paris.
Chez Francis

For somewhat traditional type Parisian fare in a upscale cafe atmosphere you may wish to consider Le Fouquets on the Champs-Elysees. Great food and cool people watching. A little more on the expensive side but worth it.
Enjoy your trip.
Cheers!

Hi Kristi,
For simple style restos you could try the places off rue Mouffetard near where John suggests, not on "la Mouffe" but in the side streets. Right on top of rue Cardinal Lemoine there is a bar/resto called Le Descartes, simple food at decent prices. Ask the waitress her name, if it's Mika, tell her you know me.

Is rue Mouffetard the street that runs through the Latin Quarter with all the people standing outside with menus luring you in with free drinks? If so, I had the WORST meal ever somewhere on that street!!!
Paul, will keep my eye open for Le Descartes and Mika
Sean, if you say it's extravagant, then I might take a look at yours for my next trip. My niece is not a foodie and she's only 17.
Linda, not finding either one of your suggestions, the raclette place looks to be gone according to a post on TA
Sally, looks interesting, will keep it in mind
John, will keep an eye open for the Moroccan place
Dusty, not sure if I can pay 11E for a ham and cheese sandwich ha ha I have heard of that one though, maybe we can stop by and have a drink
Michael, will have a look at your links, I've had good kebabs in Paris but suspect we will try that in London as I have my favorite kebab shop that I always visit there.
Grumpy, I have eaten the worst meal of my life in Paris by just picking a place, I'm trying to go armed with a few choices this time

Dabs, That may have been rue de la Harpe. It's a block off Blvd. St. Michel and tourist heaven. We had one of our worst meals there . . . and oddly, had one of our best meals there. There are so many restaurants on rue de la Harpe that some have to be good and some have to be bad. I suspect most are somewhere in between. If you're looking for non-touristy areas, though, it's a good place to avoid; very very busy.
Enjoy your trip.

Kristi, here are 4 where we have had very good meals. Le Petit Prince de Paris is near the Sorbonne and the night we were there seemed full of mostly locals. Le Bosquet is near rue Cler and Eiffel and is really good. Le Grand Bistrot is very near Notre Dame and we were taken there by Guyon who is a native Parisian. Carette Salon de The is just behind the Trocadero. We had lunch there with all our kids and grandkids and all were well satisfied with their sandwiches and quiches and they have a pastry case to rival Angelinas. They are all on my Paris page if you want more info.

My personal favourite (so far) is "Fish La Boissonerie" - superb, but simple, and the restaurant owns the bakery across the road and so the bread arrives freshly baked throughout the evening. Here's my review:

For other restaurant reviews (good and bad) I recommend my friend Francesca's Paris page:

All her reviews are 5 star ones, even if the restaurants themselves get minuses.

Re: Leaving for Paris in a week, need help with restaurants Posted: Thu June 30, 2011 08:40 AM UTC
Last Sunday, I was in the Butte aux Cailles area, not far from Place d'Italie. It is said as being a little village in Paris, and it's for sure has this village atmosphere, especially when the weather is nice.
Lots of restaurants and bistrots with terraces etc. I ate at "Village de la Butte", which serves specialities from the Auvergne. I was though quite "conservative" in my choice, having a faux filet with frites and salad (I was then envious of my next-table neighbours who had saucisse and confit de canard with potatoes gratin). I would recommend, and it's not too expensive (I paid less than 20€ for the meal, a glass of wine and a dessert)

I don't know about people luring you into restaurants being a problem only in Rue Muffetard. They do that in the Latin Quarter St Michel area too although it isn't very aggressive!
See other tips for non-touristy advice but you did specify "not too far out of the centre"

Sorry for the bum suggestion! I can't imagine that Le Bomarais has gone out of business, it was so much fun!
It does seem that Restaurant Grappion is still in business and I still recommend it. I saw, in TA--Canada--a recent review, (May 2011)so, you might take a look there. The food was good, even what I ordered. :-)It's a small place, not expensive and near the center of Paris, but not touristy at all.

Lots of interesting suggestions at here! I´m also going at wednesday, and try to find good places, not too pricey. We do spent our wedding anniversary there (14th, nothing"big" ut it´s allways worthof good dinner!) and I was suggested to book a table weeks before. We didn´t want to choose yet, so i just hope we will get a tale without bookin (or maybe book day or two before).

Unless you are going for many stars, you should be able to book a day or two ahead and be fine. We usually don't even book although we would for an anniversary.
Enjoy your trip and Happy Anniversary. 8^)

Dabs, I agree with Beausoleil. That street you are speaking of sounds like rue de la Harpe. That's in Saint Michele. Rue Mouffetard is in the Latin Quarter behind the Sorbonne. It has lots of restaurants, too, which could be said to be touristy, but not nearly like rue de la Harpe and I don't recall people standing outside trying to lure you in on rue Mouffetard. It's also a lot more charming. I have only eaten in one cafe there, le Mouffetard, choosing a croque madame. It was the best that I have eaten so far. I can't speak for steak frites. If you should be out near the catacombs you could try my neighborhood cafe, Cafe Daguerre. I have had some pretty good steak frites there as well as at the Cafe Rendezvous at the other end of the block. And as much as I don't like Cafe Indiana across the street, I had excellent hamburger and frites there, can't say much for the drinks nor the Texmex food, though.

Hi Kristi, We rented an apartment in the 18th last month and were so lucky to have some great places within a few doors of our apartment. When we came "home" in the evening, we were able to enjoy a great dinner and stagger to our door. 57 Rue Courlaincourt was our address and two places we really enjoyed were the French Thai place right downstairs (very crowded with locals) and a cafe about 4 doors up, I believe called Cafe Cepage. Excellent lamb!
Lucky niece! Have fun.
