Uploading photos from an iPad
Posted: Tue June 21, 2011 06:24 PM UTC
Does anyone know how to post photos to VT from an iPad? I can type text, but the usual box for the filename is replaced by a grayed-out "add file" button. No "Browse" button to be found anywhere. Any insights appreciated.

Interesting delema. I just tried it as well and was able to edit a page and delete the photo, but then I couldn't reload a photo. Had to go back to my windows computers. I'll also try a Macbook Air; it might be an Apple Safari issue.

That's a shame. I specifically got the iPad so I could upload photos and tips to VT as I went on my upcoming trip. Let's hope someone on VT staff actually monitors the Tech Help Forum (now I've posted two consecutive questions on Tech Help with nary a response from anyone in Manhattan Beach) and can come up with an idea to fix the glitch. Otherwise, I guess I'll be posting to some other travel website this summer.

I've sent an email to G about it. Since it's new, I'm assuming you're using the iPad II version. My test was on the original.

It's an Apple iOS issue. I don't think they allow access to the photo library or the filesyste from the Safari browser. I even tried it on an alternative iPod Touch / iPhone / iPad browser and mimicked as if it is a Firefox browser rather than Safari - not able to choose a photo.

Now if it's a native Apple iOS app then they can use Apple's programming API to access the camera roll / photo library.

So there would need to be a VT iOS app. Or somehow VT allow uploads from an internet photo site such as Flickr, Instagram, etc., which means you would use an iOS app to upload to that site initially.

It sounds like a related kind of problem to the one I have with the mobile internet, I bought a dongle because I do not have broadband at home, It works fine on all other sites when uploading pics and comments and works fine on VT as well, for example this morning I have updated my homepage without a problem and obviously posted this and it's OK, until I want to write a tip. I put the text in the box, choose the pictures and then upload them, they appear to upload but when the screen refreshes... No tip or pics. It's the same if I try it with just text. The screen refreshes and no tip :( it has been doing it for a couple of years now. I was hoping that the recent changes would sort it out as it used to work once but I try it every now and then and it is still the same.
It's not a browser problem because I have tried different ones.
I have to wait till I am at my parents house to do my tips and so do not get as many done as I would like and can not do any while i am travelling unless I can find free WiFi

While I've not tried using a wifi "dongle" for accessing VT, it sounds like the issue might be speed and whether or not your "updates" actually make it into the "system." Many times when I'm in the Baja, the network speed is so slow I have to "refresh" pages periodically to get them to even show up fully.

Unfortunately one of the original founding FAQs of the Internet was that I guarranteed to send your data, but it didn't guarrantee that the alleged recipient would ever get it.

Mobile internet is faster than a lot of free wifi connections but they seem to work fine.

I can log into VT from my iPad and post text no problem, there's just no way to post photos or videos. So as it stands now I'll be able to post tips to VT on the go, but the photos and videos will have to wait until I get home.

I downloaded Apps to upload photos from my iPad to Facebook (free) and Picasa ($3). So the technology is out there.

I'm having the same problem with the iPad and have written to the apple suggestions for improvements page (they don't reply though!). Currently I'm in China on holiday in Yunnan and posting to Facebook via the Foursquare app, it works without a VPN as well! Of course Facebook itself is blocked. It got me thinking that I could start writing tips again for VT... It's been a while, however, not being able to post photos is frustrating.

I guess the question is, will VT be able to bring out a mobile app. I certainly would use it and start uploading to VT again. Once I'm back in the work routine it's much harder to find the time!

Enjoy the holidays...
Martin.
