Living/Teaching in Hangzhou
Posted: Fri June 17, 2011 09:50 PM UTC
Hi, I have been offered a contract to teach English for a year in Hangzhou at an English First language school. Does anyone have any information about this program/school/living in Hangzhou as an American?
I would appreciate anything- Thanks!

EF in Hangzhou is different from any other EF school. The owner/manager, Joanna, is awesome. The school is well run (not usual for EF). There are tonnes of resources and the apartments are nice. Plus they organize little excursions for the teachers about once every other month.

One thing to watch for though is they have 2 schools. One for everyone, another strictly for kids.

Hangzhou is a nice city. There are plenty of tourist sites in the city. The tea hills a nice and you're super close to Shanghai.

make sure they are going to get you a foreigners residence permit (ie you have a work permit). if not you will have to leave the country every 30 days as a visa condition.

That is good to hear. I had quite a few friends who were teachers when I lived in China and they had much more trouble with residents permits than I did (I did have problems by the way but worked my through them).
Hangzhou is a very nice city and is one of my favourites in China. I went there quite often and found it to be very clean and well looked after.

I see you have also posted on Hangzhouexpat -the people there will give you honest views. If you haven't posted the same question on Shanghaiexpat then do it there too.

Hey,

I teach at EF in Ningbo, which is only 2 hours away. If you have any particular questions, don't hesitate to ask.

But I must say, so far I only have good experiences with EF. The DoS and staff will make sure you have everything you need. Getting a resident permit, accomodation, bank account etc was no issue at all.

My only advise would be to wait with booking a flight until uyou are assured of a visa to get into the country.

Good morning,
You posted this message a year ago, but I thought I will just take a chance :-).
Hope you don’t think I’m cheeky.
I would very much like to visit Hangzhou to look for business opportunities, mainly silk. I will be travelling from the Netherlands.
Everyone thinks I’m crazy to just take off to China, but i feel the going to Hangzhou to make the business contact will be much more interesting in the long run, instead of just ordering of the internet.
Would you know anyone, or would you be interested in giving me advice on finding my way?
It would be very much appreciated.
Hope to hear from you
Best regards
Maha
