Things to do in ONE DAY
Posted: Sat May 28, 2011 11:20 AM UTC
Hi. My nephew is in Amsterdam and wants to do some sight-seeing in Rotterdam. We wants to come to Rotterdam in the morning and go back at night. I have suggested that the see the following
1. The windmills in Schiedam/Chocolate Factory/ Jenever Museum
2. The Euromast
3. The Pencil Building and cubic houses
4. Ferry to Dordrecht

What time should he come into Rotterdam and in what order should he see these places so he can see all of them? What time is the last train back to Amsterdam?
Furthermore, will he have time left over to see the Maas Tunnel and the White House. Please reply quickly as he wants to go to Rotterdam in the next day or two
Thanks
Surjit

Train back to Amsterdam Centraal will not be a problem. Return day tickets are valid till 4AM the next day and after midnight there is a nighttrain service each hour.

The Pencil Building and cubic houses and the White house can be combined.

I don't know why he wants to visit the Maas tunnel; to me that's not really a tourist attraction.

If you like to combine the The windmills in Schiedam/Chocolate Factory/ Jenever Museum, you have to go in the afternoon (the museum opens after noon).

Maybe a morning ride on the ferry is good way to start.

Euromast visit could be the conclusion of the day (nice sun onto downtown Rotterdam; good for picture taking).

Obviously you have done your homework! Welcome to Rotterdam, my favourite Dutch city (I have worked there for the last 20 years).

PJ's suggestion of the order of visit is a nice one. Along with the Pencil Building and cubic houses you can also admire the public library with its yellow and blue 'plumbing' on the outside of the building. Also the 'White House', once the tallest building in Europe (but currently of laughable height!). In this area you'll also find the 'Oude Haven', an old harbour lined with old ships and plenty of restaurants.
Right in the middle of this area is train station 'Blaak' which might be convienient since you can also take a train from Rotterdam to Schiedam.
Possibly you'd like to go by tram and stop at Delfshaven (between Rotterdam and Schiedam) where the Pilgrim Fathers left for America.

The Maastunnel is a legacy of the Germans who built it during WWII. You can use the cycling tunnel to walk back and forth. A bit of history!

The 'Chocolate Factory' is called 'De Bonte koe'. It's a very busy place, quite expensive but with very nicely crafted chocolates.

The ferry to Dordrecht is fine. However, you may instead like a boat tour with Spido or with the pancake boat.

Spido leaves right under the Erasmus bridge on the north side.

The pancake boat is moored under the Euromast, it takes an hour for the tour and eat as many pancakes as you want. Costs 15 euro per person.

Enjoy Rotterdam! Do ask more questions if you need to.

Surjit, I'm sorry I did not recognise you at first. You stayed in Rotterdam for quite some weeks and we spent a day together! It was very enjoyable.
I still have the leather diary cover you gave me. Remember your bike was stolen just before we met. Such are the Dutch...

Wish your friend a lovely visit to Rotterdam!

Thanks for all the info. My nephew went to Rotterdam and did manage to cover a lot of tourist spots. He is back in India now and loved Amsterdam and Rotterdam. He actually walked the Red Carpet at the Cannes Film Festival since he was part of the UTV team that made one of the documentaries featured at the festival.
Yes my bike was indeed stolen just before we met. But it was a fun day going over the 3 bridges and lunch at that restaurant where we picked up those things that looked like baggage tags. What was it called? And you laughed at the way I pronounced the name of the beer - Oranje Bom. If I remember correctly your husband owns a toy shop right? I think it was a wallet not a diary cover since I have never bought or used one ever. Anyway I am glad you remember. I was there writing a book which has since been published in 3 languages already. Hope you are well.
Cheers

Glad to read your nephew and you enjoyed Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

I was pronouncing it in the simple English way - ORANGE BOOM. The correct pronunciation I thinks is O-rye-yaan Bomm
My nephew only got to see Amsterdam and Rotterdam, I managed to see Delft, Harlem, Den Haag and a small fishing village called Durgerdam too.The village was soooooo pretty I wished I had time to stay there for a few days. I think your country is really beautiful
Hope to be back someday soon with my wife and children
