first trip to NY
Posted: Mon March 21, 2011 09:58 PM UTC
Hello,

i am going to NY in the end of April. This will be my first trip to the city and the US in general. i have some ideas what I MUST see during my stay. However, I would appreciate recommendations on the following issues:

what is the fastest way to get from JFK to UN Headquarter area.
what Broadway show you would recommend to see
what restaurants would you recommend for lunch/dinner
any ideas for night life.

thank you in advance.
Yulia

the fastest way from jfk to the un building by public transit will be one hour and twenty to thirty minutes including a five to ten minute walk. if this is fast enough, write back and i will give you detailed instructions for the air train and the two subways required.

the airporter bus express for fifteen dollars runs direct from jfk to grand central rail station where the subway goes - same walk. the trip itself is faster but the bus only runs every thirty minutes. could be better or worse depending.

the fastest and most expensive way is a taxi cab, about $45 plus tolls and tip of 20%. should be under an hour except at the height of rush hour. for very little more, you can arrange a limo service - go to the dial7 or carmel website and reserve - they often have online discount allowances.

for upscale restaurants on the upper east side of manhattan, visit my new york city page. be sure and call in advance - many of these restaurants change ownership on a regular basis.

Reviews and discounted tickets are available on broadwaybox.com.
The 'best' show really depends on what your personal preferences are.
You can enjoy a NY landmark and have a nice choice of food at Grand Central Station (the food court is on the lower level). And the Chrysler Building is just across the street.

The best musical on Broadway is the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of "Anything Goes" (www.roundabouttheatre.org/sst/) at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

The toe-tapping tunes, spectacular dance numbers and witty writing make this 1934 Cole Porter classic come to life; this roaring will send you out the door with a smile on your face and a spring in your step. I am certain that it will receive the Best Musical Revival Tony Award in June.

Two restaurants that we enjoy are Gusto, 60 Greenwich Ave. & Perry St. (www.gustonyc.com/). When you eat at Gusto order the fried artichokes for an appetizer; they are heavenly. And August, 359 Bleecker Street, (212) 929-4774 (www.augustny.com/). When you eat at August request a table in the glass-enclosed courtyard; it is quiet and romantic.

Eating at one of these restaurants will take you into Greenwich Village, one of New York City's prime residential areas and a center for creative people for more than 100 years. Take time to explore The Village where Edna St. Vincent Millet, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Eugene O'Neill, e.e. cummings, Theodore Dreiser, and Mark Twain have lived.

thank you for the information. i was actually thinking about taxi. I've found info that tolls at this moment are something like 5.50$, and have question about tips - 20% is a must? or it's just a usual practice which is out of discussion? I've also heard 15% and 10%. so what is real situation. do not want to look impolite or silly.

the toll on the midtown tunnel is now $6.50.

as for a tip, the taxifare is a fixed $45 so i imagine the tip is pretty standardized. pretty sure someone else will help out on this. i will ask around at work later.

The tip isn't standardized. You can tip whatever you wish. The tools are included into the flat fare. A MIN tip would probably be about 10%. That's a MIN!

typical tip would be $7.50 which you might round up to $8, according to a co-worker who does this trip. if you want to save on the toll, suggest using the Queensborough Bridge rather than the Midtown Tunnel, but be aware this will add time to your trip. also make sure that if you are asked to pay a toll that you actually went thru a tunnel as opposed to over the bridge.
