| Northeast | Looking for beautiful sites Posted: Sat March 19, 2011 10:23 PM UTC
I haven't been on vt for a long time. But as we are planning to go to the US for the 1st time (3 weeks in May/JUne), I logged in again to ask you - the experts, for some information, which can not be found in the travel books.
Flight to NY City is booked as well as a hotel for the 1st 2 nights. We will rent a car and are interested in beautiful sites such as nature, perhaps a little bit of hiking, cities, nice places off the beaten path,... We will have about 2 weeks to travel around. It would be great if you could tell me your favourite places in the Northeast, so that we finally can plan where it is really worth to visit. |

I'm a big fan of Portland, Maine. It's an easy-going little city with great nightlife, culture, good shopping and the lobsters put me in foodie heaven (and doubly so considering how cheap they are even in swanky restaurants). So a road trip up through New England would be my personal recommendation.

everyone has a favorite state in new england, or maybe two. maine, as above, has numerous supporters. i am fond of vermont, with Woodstock called Americas most beautiful village by good housekeeping magazine, the lovely green mountains with stowe the touristic centerpiece, sophisticated burlington and the shelburne museum just south, and lake champlain with the off the beaten path grand isles. every village is classic new england. and manchester has a huge outlet center to boot, as well as great hotels and bed and breakfast places ( as does of course woodstock and most other small villages )
western massachusetts - the berkshire mountains - are similar with lenox, great barrington, and stockbridge - where one can even find arlo guthrie's alices restaurant. along the coastline of new england south of boston - a great historic and cultural city in its own right - consider the mystic seaport in connecticut or newport in rhode island. plenty of material for you to google. should you head into the berkshires or vermont, ring me up here and i can provide highway directions for the most scenic routes. n.

Maine has Acadia National Park. Cape Cod has a National Seashore but may be crowded in the middle of the summer. Woods Hole has the ferries to Marthas Vinyard and Nantucket. There's also New Bedford a former whaling area, and Mystic Seaport.

The above recommendations look good. Also, check out my photography and tips for Concord, New Hampshire and Westfield, MA. You'll certainly want also to check out the pioneer village at Sturbridge, MA which is more woodsy and less touristed than the Plymouth, MA one. I also have detailed pages for Danbury, CT and Chelsea, MA, which are worthy of visit, but decidedly less "beautiful" in terms of nature.

A tip about car rental: Try not to rent a car at any NY City Airports as they are much more expensive. Take a bus or train out of the city and rent from a non airport location. You can look up the locations on Google.
