Re: Travelng from Lincoln NE to Mount Rushmore and then to Freedman SD by RV Posted: Mon February 28, 2011 10:17 AM UTC
As a foreigner who has some experience in traveling to the part of the world you mention, I was struck by what attracts americans and Europeans.
Most americans would pay no attention to many of the small towns in Nebraska, such as Walthill, but the Europeans find it interesting to be in a country within a country, and also the unspoiled riverside and trekking in these regions.
If you are from Lincoln, Ne I am sure you know that he distances are rather large between Lincoln and Rapid City, SD. especially in a RV. You are looking at two full days of driving without any time for the wonderful natural attractions of South Dakota.. you might stop at the resto in Chamberlain and walk though Wall, SD since they are on the highway.
As the other poster mentioned, once you leave the natural attractions of South Dakota to the west (worthwhile seeing the geological formations), it is still another 8 hours or so to Sioux City. Sioux Falls is within short driving distance of Sioux City, so it might be a good place to stop to sight see.
The highway, if you take it is long and monotonous with towns mostly set back from the highway. I have been to Mitchel and the much touted Corn Palace and also many other small towns where the Indians live: there are at least five indian reseravations on that route Upper Brule Lower Brule Rosebud Pine Ridge Crow Creek come to mind
South Dakota is to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, if you are driving through it, you will miss it.
I was taught a lesson by a Lakota, when someone casually mentioned, there is nothing to see here and the wise Indian say: for us everything we need is here..
