Looking for a decent destination...
Posted: Sat January 24, 2004 07:41 AM UTC
What's a good place for a family of 5 (children aged 10, 15, and 17) to go in Mexico that isn't too touristy (like Cancun) fairly cheap, has interesting/fascinating attractions, preferably nice beaches, good food (I'm assuming I can find that almost anywhere), and is decently safe?

Thank you for your replies.

hi!

1. playa del carmen (mexican riviera). go to playadelcarmeninfo.com
2. zihuatanejo (pacific coast)
3. oaxaca (no beach - but incredibly charming)

good luck!

I agree with the suggestion of Zihuatanejo. There is a neighboring resort town called Ixtapa with many luxury hotels.

Playa del Carmen is perfect. From Cancun all the way down to Tulum there are places to explore including the ruins of Coba and Tulum and some amazing caves inwhich you can go snorkeling or diving. Chichen Itza is not too far away if you have a car it might be a good day trip.

Playa del Carmen is crap. Just a much touristic resort town with no Mexican flavour. Only the sea is worthy, but try Isla Mujeres then. Great beach!

It's not crap if your a family of five with little ones and all you want is a nice beach, and a place that is convienient and cheap. I don't think they are looking for a "mexican experience"

i would vote for isla mujeres.
it's close to the airport.
it still has avery mexican feel because foreign frachises are not allowed on the island and it has great beaches.
playa del carmen is not too bad but isla mujeres is better.

Yes, I would like such a thing, but at the same time want a resort-type place.

I think kids would be happier at Playa del Carmen. They can eat at McDonald's.

my wife & i have stayed at the qualton club twice now, & have been very pleased both times. it is a all-inclusive hotel, (which i highly recommend with a family of your size) there are daily activities for all ages, & a nice quiet beach. many mexican national families like to stay there. the staff is wonderful. there are nightly shows, with a different theme every night. the buffet style meals co-ordinate with the theme also. we stayed for 7 nights, & paid $1500 which included airfare from chicago, airport transportation, all meals & drinks, plus most the activities are free. we booked our vacation through apple vacations. well worth the money.
