Could somebody tell me if an international drivers license is needed in S.A. and Namibia or if a standard State drivers License from the U.S. is enough?
I would like to rent a car from Capetown and drive up into Namibia and then back down. I will need the car for about three weeks.
I trust Mad on these things ... I rented in SA and had the International License ... and everything went smoothly ... It isn't any big deal to get one - the AAA issues them for about $10 ....
A couple years ago, I spent several weeks driving all over both South Africa and Namibia armed with only my US driver's license. At no time was I asked about an International Driver's License. The rental agents didn't even ask. I got stopped at police roadblocks a few times, and they didn't ask or care either. Your license from home should be fine.
I don't know what the rules are for driving a rental car into Namibia from South Africa. I rented independently in Durban and Windhoek, so you may want to check out the rules on this before setting out.
Thanks Sean, I didn't think I needed an international license, but did not want to get there i find out something different. thanks for the second comment. i have been checking if the rental companies allow you to cross boarders. some charge an excess, some don't allow you to go, and some don't charge anything.
