Travelling to Petra from Amman
Posted: Fri January 23, 2004 11:44 AM UTC
I am going to spend one day in Petra. I heard that I can visit there as a day-trip from Amman.

Any information about JETT bus or other public transportation means to go there early in the morning and return in late afternoon.

Alternately, if I want to spend an evening in WADI MUSA so that I can visit Petra early in the morning, what time does the last bus go from Amman to Wadi Musa?

Thanks a lot for any information.

I would try and spend a little more time at Petra than a few hours. I spent a full day there. Early morning til late night and wished I had more time. When you first walk through there and see the buildings for the first time, it makes you wish you's lived back in the days. A couple hours just isn't enough time to soak it all in.

Getting to and from Wadi Musa by public transport is not that easy. There are 3 minibuses that travel between Amman and Wadi Musa directly (three hour trip) and most of them leave in the morning. Otherwise, you can try going to Ma'an (there are buses every hour from Amman; 2 hour trip) then wait patiently and transfer to a crowded uncomfortable bus to Wadi Musa, if they even show up!

It's almost impossible to do a day trip from Amman. You'll spend 8 hours in a bus or waiting for a bus (to and from). Add another hour to walk through the "Siq" before even reaching the legendary Petra. Definitely not recommended to do a day trip from Amman. You need 2 days to enjoy Petra.

Instead, a good day trip from Amman is Jerash or the Dead Sea.
